Bomb Scare at Elementary School After Boy Brings WWII Hand Grenade

A quiet Friday morning at a small primary school in England took a dramatic turn when a young student brought a WWII hand grenade to class for show and tell — and it was the school principal who stepped up to save the day.

It all unfolded on May 16 at Osmaston Church of England Primary School in Ashbourne, Derbyshire. As students excitedly shared their objects during an assembly, one child reached into his pocket and pulled out what appeared to be an actual hand grenade.

Head teacher Jeanette Hart immediately stepped in. “I ended the assembly, took it off him, and slowly carried it outside and put it behind a tree in the car park,” she told the BBC. “I wasn’t 100 percent happy carrying it, to be honest.”

The grenade, which the student had brought in from home without telling his parents, turned out to be a family heirloom from the World War II era. Hart explained that the child likely didn’t understand the seriousness of the object. “We’d been talking about VE Day,” she said. “He knew it was from the war and just thought it was interesting.”

Emergency services, including a bomb squad and local police, rushed to the scene. Authorities confirmed the grenade was a “grade 5” device — old and inactive. Military ordnance experts used X-rays to ensure there were no active components inside.

Thankfully, the children were safely evacuated and remained unaware of the real danger. “They just thought it was an exciting day with police around,” Hart said. “They were happy to be outside playing.”

After the dust settled, Hart had a quiet chat with the student and his family, who were shocked to learn their child had taken the wartime relic to school. Police later issued a reminder to parents: “Double-check what your kids are taking to school, especially if it’s a family heirloom.”

As for Hart, she’s being praised for her calm and courageous actions. But even she admits — carrying an old grenade across the school parking lot wasn’t exactly part of the job description.
