A brutal stabbing spree erupted inside a men’s homeless shelter just steps from the Salem Police Department on Sunday night, sending at least 11 people to the hospital and raising urgent questions about public safety, mental health, and the failure of progressive city policies.
The horror unfolded around 7:15 p.m. local time at the Salem Union Gospel Mission — a 50,000-square-foot shelter hailed as a centerpiece of Oregon’s homelessness response. Instead, it became the scene of one of the worst acts of violence in the city in recent years.
A Suspect in Custody — But Few Answers
Police say a man, whose identity is still being withheld, was arrested at the scene after allegedly launching a knife attack on shelter staff and residents. According to Craig Smith, executive director of the mission, the suspect had just checked in the night before and was returning for a second stay when he suddenly snapped.
“Something set him off. He had a knife in his bag,” Smith told NBC News. “We had someone on the check-in desk who got hurt. It was chaos.”
Salem Police have not confirmed a motive, and the suspect’s background remains unknown. Officers blocked off several city streets as they processed the scene late into the night.
Victims in Limbo as Community Reels
All 11 victims were rushed to Salem Health Hospital with injuries ranging from minor to life-threatening, according to local reports. Police spokeswoman Angela Hedrick told Newsweek the victims’ conditions remain unclear, and the investigation is still in its early stages.
A Systemic Failure?
This savage attack is the latest flashpoint in what critics say is a state spiraling out of control. Oregon has become a hotbed of crime and dysfunction — a result, many argue, of soft-on-crime policies and a failure to address the root causes of mental illness and addiction.
A 2024 report by the National Coalition for the Homeless painted a grim picture: nearly one-third of all fatal attacks on homeless people in the U.S. between 2020 and 2022 happened in Oregon. The same report cited a staggering 61% spike in housing costs and laws that punish the homeless for sleeping outside — a combination that critics say dehumanizes the vulnerable while ignoring public safety.
“Progressive leaders keep pushing failed social experiments, and the public keeps paying the price,” said Mark Hemsworth, a local business owner who says he’s seen an increase in violence around downtown Salem. “Now it’s spilling into shelters that are supposed to be safe.”
What’s Next
Detectives are expected to release more information Monday afternoon. The Salem Police Department has not ruled out additional charges.
Until then, one thing is clear: this wasn’t just a random act of violence. It’s another example of a state — and a system — on the brink.

Nothing is going to get any better when it comes to the homeless situation. The government cannot create jobs for those who want to work.”Created” jobs are just another term for welfare and solves nothing. And training programs designed to enable people to have the necessary qualifications to enter the job market, such as it is, are useless unless there are jobs to enter into. And, except for trade schools, public schooling is too far lost into “woke” thinking to be bothered preparing the young with the baseline knowledge to even handle going to trade schools. Maybe Russia had it right after all with communism. Send people off to the communes where they were forced to work or starve. I’m not promoting this at all – just saying.
