Jimmy Buffett’s Estate Turns into Explosive Legal Battle

The battle over the late Jimmy Buffett’s fortune is heating up—and it’s no beachside vacation.

Less than two years after the beloved “Margaritaville” singer died of cancer at age 76, his widow Jane Buffett has filed a blistering legal petition in Los Angeles, accusing co-trustee Richard Mozenter of mismanaging her marital trust and treating her with “outright hostility.” In response, Mozenter launched his own counterattack in Florida, seeking to strip Jane of her powers as co-trustee.

At the heart of the feud? A $275 million estate and control over Buffett’s sprawling empire of resorts, restaurants, casinos, and branded merchandise. And Jane Buffett says she’s being cut out of the paradise her husband spent decades building.

Wife of 46 Years Says She’s in the Dark

Jane Buffett, who married the legendary singer-songwriter in 1977 and raised three children with him, says Mozenter—her co-trustee and longtime business associate of Buffett—has left her completely in the dark about her financial future.

“Rather than help his recently-widowed client understand her finances,” Jane’s legal team wrote, “Mr. Mozenter spent the next 16 months stonewalling and making excuses.”

According to court documents, Mozenter refused for over a year to disclose how much income the marital trust could provide. When he finally responded in February 2025, Jane says the numbers were shockingly low—less than $2 million annually on a nine-figure estate. Mozenter allegedly told her she might need to “adjust her lifestyle” or sell personal real estate to cover expenses.

Her attorneys allege this paltry estimate ignores nearly $14 million in recent distributions from Margaritaville, the lifestyle brand that Buffett co-founded and which the trust partially owns.

“This is either gross incompetence or a blatant attempt to deprive Mrs. Buffett of what her husband intended for her to have,” a source close to the family told us.

Mozenter Fires Back

Mozenter has denied wrongdoing and filed a legal petition of his own—this time in Florida—requesting that Jane be removed from her position overseeing Buffett’s estate. He has yet to respond publicly to the claims, but court insiders suggest the fight is far from over.

Mozenter’s firm reportedly billed the trust over $1.7 million in 2024 alone, and Jane’s petition notes that “the majority of her net worth is controlled by someone she does not trust.” Her legal team also accused Mozenter of belittling and condescending behavior in his dealings with her.

The Empire Buffett Built

Jimmy Buffett wasn’t just a singer—he was a businessman with vision. His 1977 song “Margaritaville” became the foundation for an empire, with Buffett eventually earning a spot on Forbes’ billionaires list in 2023.

His holding company, Margarita Holdings LLC, was involved in everything from cruise lines and casinos to frozen drinks and beachwear. Buffett personally held a 28% stake in the company, and his trust owns another 20%—a major asset in dispute.

“Jimmy wasn’t just strumming guitars—he was building a brand that touched every corner of American leisure culture,” said entertainment business analyst Ray Harrington. “That brand is now caught in a tug-of-war.”

Family in the Crossfire

Jane and Jimmy Buffett shared more than a marriage—they built a family. Their children Savannah, 46, Delaney, 33, and Cameron, 30, are now watching their parents’ legacy being torn apart in court.

“They were always a tight-knit unit,” said one friend of the family. “It’s heartbreaking to see this going public.”

What Happens Next

Legal experts predict the estate battle could drag on for years unless a settlement is reached. With Buffett’s empire still generating tens of millions annually, neither side appears ready to walk away.

“This isn’t about beach songs anymore,” said estate attorney Travis Bledsoe. “It’s about power, control, and a legacy worth hundreds of millions.”

Stay tuned. The storm in Margaritaville is just getting started.
