A chilling letter obtained by authorities has thrown Minnesota politics into chaos, as alleged spree killer Vance Boelter accused Governor Tim Walz—a prominent Democrat—of instructing him to assassinate U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar and other state officials.
The shocking accusation came to light after Boelter, who fatally shot State Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband and wounded State Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, left behind a rambling, handwritten note addressed to the FBI. The Minnesota Star Tribune first reported on the explosive letter.
Law enforcement sources say the document is filled with bizarre, paranoid claims and names a list of more than 45 state and federal officials as potential targets. Among them: both Minnesota Senators Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith, both high-profile Democrats. Boelter insists in his letter that Governor Walz, who made national headlines as Kamala Harris’s running mate in last year’s failed White House bid, “gave him orders” and that his training came “off the books” through secret U.S. military channels.
The letter, recovered from a Buick abandoned near Boelter’s residence, is reportedly “incoherent and hard to read,” according to investigators. A separate abandoned SUV found nearby was packed with weapons, ammunition, and a hit list—details sure to raise new questions about Minnesota’s security protocols and the radicalization of would-be killers.
A spokesperson for the Hennepin County Attorney’s office told local reporters, “Due to the seriousness of the allegations it contains, we will state only that we have seen no evidence that the allegations regarding Governor Walz are based in fact.” Governor Walz’s office issued a terse statement Friday, calling the tragedy “deeply disturbing for all Minnesotans,” and expressing gratitude toward law enforcement. Walz, whose tenure has been rocked by controversy and widespread criticism from conservative groups, made no further comment on Boelter’s extraordinary claims.
Senator Klobuchar responded to the allegations by praising law enforcement’s swift action: “Boelter is a very dangerous man and I am deeply grateful that law enforcement got him behind bars before he killed other people.”
But questions are already swirling. How did Boelter acquire his alleged military training? Why was he able to amass a stockpile of weapons without drawing attention? And what, if any, is the truth behind his claims of political conspiracy at the highest levels of Minnesota’s Democratic leadership?
For many Minnesotans, the episode is a sobering reminder of just how volatile American politics has become—and how critical it is to ensure transparency and accountability among elected officials.
As the investigation continues, Republicans are calling for a full review of Walz’s communications and military background, while critics argue the governor’s soft-on-crime policies have left the state vulnerable to violence and disorder.
One Republican lawmaker, speaking on background, said, “This kind of chaos is exactly what happens when Democrats put ideology over public safety. Minnesotans deserve answers, and they deserve to feel safe in their own state.”
Investigators say they are still sorting through evidence found in Boelter’s vehicles and searching for any links between the suspect and his alleged political targets. For now, the case has left Minnesota’s Democratic establishment scrambling for damage control—and a public demanding answers.
