Residents of southern Brooklyn woke up to a disturbing sight Friday morning: Old Glory flying upside down at three public parks, just steps from a major U.S. Army base. Furious locals are calling it a sign of growing anti-American sentiment fueled by New York City’s left-wing leadership.
The upside-down flags — spotted at John J. Carty Park, Fort Hamilton Triangle, and Bath Beach Park — sparked immediate backlash from families, veterans, and community leaders. According to the U.S. Flag Code, an inverted flag signals dire distress, but in recent years it has been hijacked as a symbol of protest against the country and its values.
“It’s a disgrace — and frankly, I’m not surprised,” said Michael Ragusa, a well-known Republican activist and city correction officer. “Bay Ridge used to be a stronghold for patriots. Now, the same radical behavior we’re seeing spread nationwide is infecting our neighborhoods, and local Democrats are too busy joking about it to care.”
The Parks Department scrambled to correct the error after a flood of calls from upset citizens. Crews were dispatched to all three parks to restore the flags to their proper position, especially at Carty Park, which sits in the shadow of the Fort Hamilton Army base, home to thousands of active-duty soldiers and veterans.
Locals Say Political Climate to Blame
Longtime residents blame the city’s political climate for emboldening acts of disrespect. Several pointed the finger directly at Councilman Justin Brannan, a Democrat who represents Bay Ridge. Rather than condemn the incident, Brannan dismissed concerns on social media, joking that the state’s Conservative Party Chairman must be responsible for the flag blunder.
“It just shows he doesn’t take his job — or this country — seriously,” Ragusa fired back. “How can you expect respect for the flag when the people in charge treat patriotism like a punchline?”
Brooklyn Republican Party Chairman Richie Barsamian, who is campaigning to replace Brannan on the council, was among the first to demand the flags be fixed. “My phone blew up with calls from veterans and parents,” Barsamian told reporters. “We have men and women who sacrificed everything for that flag. This is a slap in the face.”
Parks Department Tight-Lipped as Investigation Continues
While the Parks Department says it has put Brooklyn managers on alert for further incidents, officials have so far refused to say if any suspects have been identified. Witnesses at Carty Park described seeing a group of teenage boys tampering with the flagpole the night before but did not see who ultimately flipped the flag.
For John Meister, a 29-year-old father visiting the park with his two children, the sight was a painful reminder of what’s at stake. “It’s disrespectful because a lot of vets gave their lives for this nation,” Meister said. “People need to remember what that flag stands for.”
A City Divided Over American Values
While both Brannan and Barsamian claimed to have called the Parks Department to demand action, the tone couldn’t have been more different. Barsamian blasted Brannan’s jokes as “totally inappropriate” and accused the councilman of undermining local traditions, like the annual Memorial Day flag-raising led by Conservative Party Chairman Gerard Kassar.
Brannan, who is now running for city comptroller, tried to walk back his comments through a spokesperson, insisting he respects the flag and believes it belongs to everyone, not just one political party. But for many Brooklyn families, the damage was already done.
“Nobody should be messing with the flag — period,” said another veteran at the park, shaking his head. “If our leaders can’t take that seriously, maybe it’s time for new leadership.”
As the Parks Department quietly investigates, one thing is clear: the fight for America’s soul is playing out on the flagpoles of New York — and the nation is watching.

What The! Don’t be disrespectful to my country, just get the heck out!
Typical for NYC. They’re infected with a the progressive/socialist disease – far worse than any covid strain could ever be. But always remember, the bulk of America doesn’t reside in these pockets of anti-Americanism such as New York, L.A., Chicago and the rest. It’s just that the mainstream media wants to make you think that it does and thinks like they do.
Those who disgraced our National Flag, you are Anti- American; Please get out of out great nation! You are a disgrace! Shameless crooks!!!
