A trip to Six Flags Over Georgia turned deadly Monday afternoon when a man reportedly fell from one of the park’s tallest roller coasters, leaving one person dead, several others injured and terrified passengers stranded high above the ground.
The tragedy unfolded October 12 on Goliath, a massive roller coaster that towers 200 feet above the popular amusement park in Austell, just outside Atlanta.
According to the Cobb County Police Department, emergency crews responded to an incident involving a roller coaster shortly before 4 p.m. Authorities confirmed that one person died and several others were injured.
Witnesses told local news outlets that a man had fallen from the Goliath ride while it was operating.
One park visitor described a horrifying scene, claiming the man struck part of the roller coaster multiple times during the fall.
“He was in our pictures,” the witness told local television reporters, referring to photographs taken during the ride. “He fell and hit the car three different times.”
The witness account has not yet been independently confirmed by investigators, and authorities have not explained how the victim may have fallen from the attraction.
Following the incident, the roller coaster came to a stop, leaving other passengers stranded on the elevated track.
News helicopters captured dramatic footage of riders being escorted off the attraction using an emergency staircase alongside the ride’s towering lift hill.
Video showed employees helping passengers descend from the stopped roller coaster in small groups while police and emergency personnel responded below.
Six Flags confirmed the death in a statement expressing condolences to the victim’s family.
“We are deeply saddened by the guest incident at our park today. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with the guest’s family, friends, and loved ones,” a spokesperson said.
The company added that it was providing support to affected guests and employees while cooperating with investigators.
“The park team and local authorities responded immediately, and we are cooperating fully with local authorities as they complete their investigation.”
Six Flags declined to release further information, citing respect for the victim’s family.
The identity of the person who died has not been publicly released. Police also have not disclosed the conditions of the other injured guests or explained whether their injuries occurred during the initial incident or the subsequent evacuation.
Goliath is one of the park’s best-known attractions.
Opened in 2006, the steel roller coaster was manufactured by Swiss company Bolliger & Mabillard and reaches speeds of approximately 70 mph.
The attraction features a 170-foot initial drop, another drop of approximately 175 feet and a dramatic spiral designed to deliver intense sensations of speed and weightlessness.
Its towering structure makes it one of the most recognizable rides at Six Flags Over Georgia.
The fatal incident comes during a difficult period for the amusement park industry, with several high-profile ride safety concerns attracting national attention.
In September, Six Flags Magic Mountain in California permanently closed its X2 roller coaster amid lawsuits and more than 100 reported injury claims involving the attraction.
Those allegations concern a different ride at a separate park, and there is no established connection to Monday’s tragedy in Georgia.
Fatal roller coaster accidents remain uncommon in the United States, where amusement park operators are generally subject to state safety regulations and equipment inspection requirements.
However, serious incidents can raise questions about mechanical systems, restraint equipment, operating procedures and passenger safety.
Investigators have not determined whether any mechanical failure or restraint malfunction contributed to the death at Six Flags Over Georgia.
The Cobb County Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit is leading the investigation, with authorities expected to examine witness statements, available footage and the circumstances surrounding the ride.
It was not immediately clear when Goliath would reopen.
For families who witnessed the emergency, an ordinary afternoon of amusement park thrills ended in tragedy as emergency crews worked to bring stranded passengers back to safety.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into what caused the fatal incident.
