In a scandal shaking the heart of D.C.’s media elite, a longtime Washington Post journalist who once helped take down a Republican Senate candidate is now facing disturbing federal child pornography charges—announced by none other than former judge and current D.C. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro.
FBI Raid Uncovers Disturbing Evidence
Thomas Pham LeGro, 48, was arrested Thursday after federal agents executed a search warrant on his Washington, D.C. residence. The FBI says they found 11 videos of child sexual abuse material on LeGro’s work-issued laptop. Authorities also discovered shattered pieces of a hard drive dumped just outside the room where the laptop was recovered—an apparent attempt to destroy additional evidence.
Pirro’s office confirmed the charges during a Friday press conference.
“This is a case where the accused had unfettered access to some of the most powerful institutions in journalism,” Pirro said. “No position, no award, no newsroom immunity shields someone from accountability—especially when it comes to crimes against children.”
Journalist With a High-Profile Past
LeGro isn’t just any media figure. A veteran video editor for The Washington Post, he played a central role in the paper’s Pulitzer Prize-winning investigation into then-GOP Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore in 2017—a series that sparked national outrage and nearly derailed Moore’s political career. Moore had threatened to sue the paper over its reporting.
Ironically, it’s LeGro who now finds himself on the wrong end of a federal courtroom. He made his first appearance in D.C. District Court Friday and is being held pending a detention hearing scheduled for next Wednesday. If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in federal prison.
Links to a Shady Financial Network
According to a heavily redacted FBI affidavit, investigators also tied LeGro to several accounts with E-Gold, a digital payment platform shuttered in 2007 after it was exposed as a haven for money launderers—including those trafficking in child porn.
The FBI had already been monitoring LeGro’s online activity since May after securing court approval, though details of what triggered the investigation remain under seal.
From PBS to Pulitzers—and Now Prison?
LeGro’s journalism career spans decades. He began working in the Washington Post sports department in 2000, left in 2006 to produce for PBS NewsHour, and returned to the Post in 2013. He has been with the outlet ever since.
The Washington Post, for its part, issued a brief statement:
“The Washington Post understands the severity of these allegations, and the employee has been placed on leave.”
Media Double Standards?
Critics are already calling out the silence from legacy media outlets. Despite LeGro’s prominent role in attacking conservative figures, mainstream networks have largely buried the story. Some conservative commentators are accusing the media of hypocrisy.
“It’s not just about one man’s sick crimes,” said former congressional investigator Matt Whitaker. “It’s about a culture in elite newsrooms that protects their own until it’s impossible to hide.”
LeGro’s arrest is yet another black eye for a press establishment already under fire for bias, double standards, and a lack of internal scrutiny. And with Jeanine Pirro leading the charge, Washington’s media class may have just met its match.
