WWE Star Gunned Down in Arkansas at 41 — Suspect Detained, Community in Shock

The wrestling world is mourning the shocking death of former WWE NXT performer Kevin Nikel, also known to fans as Ivan Warsaw and Knuckles Madsen, after he was fatally shot in a quiet Arkansas neighborhood on June 10. He was just 41.

The shooting unfolded just before midnight at a home in Rogers, near the Oklahoma and Missouri state lines. According to the Benton County Sheriff’s Office, Nikel was found with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but doctors couldn’t save him.

Lt. Shannon Jenkins confirmed that 50-year-old Michael Hogue, a man who lived at the home where Nikel was discovered, was taken into custody. However, Hogue has not been charged in connection with the killing. He’s currently being held on unrelated probation violations.

The wrestling community has responded with an outpouring of grief and disbelief.

“He was a great human. Great heart. Great pro wrestler,” said TNA X Division champion Moose, who was scheduled to face Nikel in the ring next weekend. “His life got taken way too early.”

Nikel, born in Memphis, launched his wrestling career in Texas in 2007 and joined WWE in 2012. He wrestled under the NXT brand for a year, sharing the ring with names like Mojo Rawley and Kassius Ohno. After WWE, he continued to wrestle in the independent circuit and eventually founded Ozark Mountain Wrestling (OMW) in Rogers.

“He had this crazy range,” remembered Xavier Woods in a 2020 tribute video. “He could play anything—serious, funny, creepy. It was insane.”

One of his lesser-known projects was a disturbing clown character he developed after working with the late Matt Borne, the original Doink the Clown. “I didn’t want to be Doink,” Nikel said in a past interview. “I wanted to be the guy outside your window at 3 a.m. with face paint on. Something that gets under your skin.”

Wrestling insiders say Nikel was once considered for the infamous Wyatt Family faction, led by Bray Wyatt. But WWE management reportedly passed on the idea.

Nikel’s final match took place exactly one year before his death—an indie show in Texas where he lost in a tag team bout. Outside the ring, he was known for his work with local kids and his devotion to his 8-year-old son, Zach.

“He was always there for the kids in the community,” one parent commented online. “He mentored our son through some tough times. He cared.”

Zach’s mother told local reporter Doug Warner that her son loved being at the wrestling events, sometimes even stepping into the ring with his dad. “Kevin lived for his son. That boy was the center of his world,” she said.

As the investigation continues, there are still no charges filed in the case. But for many in the wrestling world, and in the small town of Rogers, the damage has already been done.

One fan summed up the heartbreak in a comment under a memorial post:
“We lost more than a wrestler. We lost a man who made a difference.”
