Oklahoma Farmer Mauled to Death by Water Buffaloes He Bought Hours Earlier

A seasoned Oklahoma farmer was violently killed by two water buffaloes less than 24 hours after purchasing them at a local auction — turning what was supposed to be a promising new investment into a fatal nightmare.

Brad McMichael, 45, was attacked on Friday at his rural property in Jones, a quiet farming town just outside Oklahoma City. The buffaloes — each weighing over a thousand pounds — reportedly charged McMichael as he attempted to inspect their pen the morning after their arrival.

“He died doing what he loved,” said Jennifer Green, McMichael’s longtime girlfriend. “He loved raising animals. He was passionate about farming. But no one could’ve predicted this.”

McMichael had years of experience working with exotic livestock and reportedly purchased the animals for their meat. But less than a day later, they turned on him.

Why the sudden aggression? Experts point to stress.
“These animals had just been moved, possibly for the first time in years,” said livestock specialist Craig Norwood. “New environments, unfamiliar handlers — it’s the perfect storm for dangerous behavior.”

Police say one of the buffaloes tried to charge officers when they responded to the scene. Both animals were ultimately euthanized.

The tragedy has left a gaping hole in McMichael’s family.

“Those animals took my best friend,” Green said tearfully. “He was a man who could make anyone laugh — now there’s just silence.”

Amy Smith, McMichael’s ex-wife, echoed the heartbreak. “He was the hardest working man I had ever known. He gave everything to his farm, and it’s what took him in the end.”

McMichael’s teenage son, Rylan, says the lessons his father taught him will never be forgotten.
“He raised me on that farm,” the boy said. “I learned everything I know from him.”

Authorities are still investigating the incident, but locals say the message is clear — even experienced farmers can fall victim to the unpredictability of powerful animals.

“He didn’t deserve this,” Green added. “He saw those buffalo as opportunity. He didn’t know it would be his end.”

This marks at least the third fatal U.S. encounter involving water buffalo in the last decade — a stark reminder of the risks rural Americans face daily in their line of work.
