After months of whispered rumors, skipped public events, and cryptic comments, former President Barack Obama finally spoke out about the status of his 33-year marriage to Michelle — and he did it with a joke.
“She took me back!” Obama chuckled on the latest episode of his wife’s podcast, IMO, while seated beside the former first lady and her brother Craig Robinson. But for millions of Americans who’ve been following the signs of serious strain between the Obamas, the humor may not be enough to shut down the speculation.
The divorce rumors exploded in January 2025 when Michelle was notably absent from two major events: President Donald Trump’s triumphant second inauguration and the funeral of former President Jimmy Carter. At the time, the silence from both Obamas was deafening. No statement. No clarification. Just absence.
Political commentators and insiders quickly began to question whether something more personal — and more serious — was going on. And as the former first lady continued to dodge appearances, the gossip grew louder.
Now, seven months later, Barack Obama, 63, appeared on his wife’s podcast and joked about nearly losing her.
“It was touch and go for a while!” he said, smiling. But the words seemed to ring truer than intended, especially in light of past comments that hinted at deeper issues.
Back in April, Obama admitted during a Q&A at Hamilton College that he was “in a deep deficit” with Michelle and had been trying to “dig himself out of that hole by doing occasionally fun things.” Not exactly a ringing endorsement of marital bliss.
Michelle, 61, has aggressively tried to squash the rumors in recent months, calling the idea of divorce “laughable” and claiming there hasn’t been a single moment she thought of leaving Barack.
“There hasn’t been one moment in our marriage where I thought about quitting my man,” she said on IMO. “We’ve had some hard times… and I’ve become a better person because of the man I’m married to.”
Yet just last month, the former first lady made headlines when she said she was “so glad” she never had a son — “because he would have been a Barack Obama.”
That biting comment struck many as passive-aggressive at best, and it reignited the rumor mill that was already in overdrive.
Craig Robinson, Michelle’s older brother and podcast co-host, shared that even strangers are convinced something’s up.
“A woman came up to me in Wichita and asked, ‘What did he do?’” Robinson said, laughing.
Obama didn’t deny the premise. “You knew she was gonna say ‘What did he do?’” he joked. “Not ‘What happened?’ but ‘How’d he mess up?’”
While Robinson reassured the woman that “everything’s fine,” it’s telling that the narrative being spun is still one of redemption — as if something had to be forgiven.
Meanwhile, the former president has been busy criticizing his own party. At a July 11 DNC fundraiser, Obama slammed Democrats for being too soft in the face of Trump’s dominance.
“It’s going to require a little less navel-gazing and a little less whining,” Obama told donors. “And it’s going to require Democrats to just toughen up.”
Strong words. But as critics point out, it’s hard to lecture others on unity and strength when your own family appears to be battling behind closed doors.
While the Obamas try to present a united front, it’s clear that all is not perfect in paradise. Public absences, past admissions of trouble, pointed remarks, and awkward jokes all add up to one truth: America’s most famous political couple may be more fractured than they’re letting on.
As President Donald Trump enters his second term with full control of the GOP and a growing coalition of independents, some wonder if the Obamas’ influence — once untouchable — is finally starting to crumble both in public and in private.
Whether it’s political fatigue, post-presidency pressure, or something more personal, the cracks are showing. And not even a podcast laugh can plaster over the growing questions.
Stay tuned.
