Brazil’s embattled conservative icon Jair Bolsonaro has been forced to wear an ankle monitor and cut contact with his own son—after what allies are calling a politically motivated crackdown by the country’s far-left establishment.
The unprecedented order was issued by Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, a fierce critic of Bolsonaro and a close ally of socialist President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Moraes claimed Bolsonaro poses a “flight risk” and could attempt to mobilize international support—especially from Washington, where his son Eduardo Bolsonaro has been rallying top Trump officials to intervene.
“It’s an outrage,” Bolsonaro told reporters from the steps of his private residence, where he is now under effective house arrest. “I am not a criminal—I’m a patriot being hunted for standing up to the corrupt elite.”
The former Brazilian president is facing charges of inciting an “attempted coup” following his narrow loss in the 2022 election to Lula, a convicted felon whose previous prison sentence for corruption was controversially overturned just in time for him to run again. Prosecutors are also bizarrely accusing Bolsonaro of trying to poison his political rival—an allegation he calls “utter science fiction.”
But critics say this isn’t justice—it’s vengeance.
“This is straight out of the leftist playbook,” said Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), who has been outspoken in support of Bolsonaro. “Target your political opponents, criminalize dissent, and silence the opposition.”
Bolsonaro’s son Eduardo, a Brazilian congressman and rising global conservative figure, has been in Washington meeting with allies of President Donald Trump, urging the administration to put pressure on Brazil’s judiciary. According to sources close to the situation, Eduardo has called on President Trump to condemn what he called the “Marxist persecution” of his father.
President Trump didn’t hold back.
“This is a disgraceful witch hunt—just like the one they tried to run on me,” Trump said during a campaign stop in Houston. “If Brazil wants to start messing with our allies, we’re ready to hit back. I’m talking tariffs. Big ones. Fifty percent.”
The Trump administration has already hinted at possible sanctions against Brazilian officials if the politically motivated trial proceeds.
Justice Moraes, the face of Brazil’s Supreme Court crackdown, is known for wielding aggressive power to silence critics of the Lula government. In this case, he claims Bolsonaro was working “in concert with foreign actors”—a veiled jab at Trump—to coerce the court and destabilize the Brazilian federal government.
Political analysts warn the move could escalate tensions between Brazil and the United States.
“This is lawfare, plain and simple,” said Ana Mendes, a Brazilian journalist exiled for criticizing Lula. “Bolsonaro is being gagged, monitored, and cut off from his family to stop him from defending himself on the world stage.”
For many in the U.S., Bolsonaro’s case is being seen as part of a growing global trend—where conservative leaders face politically driven prosecutions after challenging the leftist status quo.
“It’s not just Brazil. It’s Trump, it’s Netanyahu, it’s Orban—they’re all being hunted,” said Steve Bannon on War Room. “This is the globalist regime’s war on populism.”
Bolsonaro, now confined to his home, said he remains defiant.
“I will not bow. I will not break. And I will not be silenced.”
