After days of mounting criticism over the Trump administration’s handling of the infamous Epstein files, the America First base exploded back into action Thursday — not in outrage, but in celebration. A Wall Street Journal article, meant to tie President Donald Trump to the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, backfired spectacularly, igniting a firestorm of support around the president.
At the center of the drama was a dubious claim: the Journal published what it alleged was a 2003 birthday letter from Trump to Epstein. Trump immediately denied it, called the article defamatory, and filed a $10 billion lawsuit against the publication the next day.
“This is a hit job — and a lazy one at that,” said Charlie Kirk on his Friday show. “President Trump is going scorched earth and taking the fight directly to the corrupt media. That’s leadership.”
Former Trump advisor Steve Bannon echoed the tone, declaring, “They tried to destroy him. Again. But we are so back. The movement is energized.”
Earlier backlash from the base had centered around the surprising announcement by two former MAGA stars-turned-FBI officials — Kash Patel and Dan Bongino — who had signed off on a memo stating there was “no Epstein client list,” enraging online conservatives who had long believed Democratic elites were being protected.
But the release of the Journal story, combined with Trump’s legal strike and a bold move by Attorney General Pam Bondi to begin the process of releasing grand jury transcripts in the Epstein investigation, shifted the narrative dramatically.
“I told you, Trump plays 4D chess,” said Benny Johnson. “He was never going to let this die. This is just the beginning.”
On Thursday, President Trump announced that he directed Bondi to request the release of all pertinent grand jury testimony related to the Epstein case, pending court approval.
“This is the transparency we were promised,” tweeted conservative commentator Laura Loomer. “Other presidents hid this stuff. Trump is exposing it.”
Critics-turned-supporters like Megyn Kelly and Elon Musk joined the chorus. Musk posted, “Media tried a weak hit. Got boomeranged by the truth. #WeAreSoBack.”
The WSJ story may have been intended as a smear — but instead, it turned into a unifying moment for a base that had been rattled.
“The MAGA movement has been reinvigorated,” said Jack Posobiec on Bannon’s War Room. “Everyone is firing on all cylinders. The people know who’s fighting for them.”
Still, some caution that the promised grand jury testimony may take time to release — a process that involves judicial review and consideration for Epstein’s victims.
But for now, Trump’s supporters are more focused on the optics of a president who punches back — hard.
Charlie Kirk closed out his Friday broadcast with a pointed message to Trump doubters.
“If you were worried, if you were unsure — now’s the time to say thank you,” he said. “This is a president who delivers, no matter how brutal the attacks.”
And to drive it home, Kirk opened the show with Joe Cocker’s “With a Little Help From My Friends,” a not-so-subtle tribute to a base that, after a brief wobble, is locked and loaded once again.
Trump isn’t backing down. And neither is MAGA.
