A chilling new true crime series has reignited national interest in one of California’s most shocking and bizarre murder cases—a crime that blended teenage rebellion, satanic panic, and a horrifying betrayal among friends.
Investigation Discovery’s six-part docuseries A Killer Among Friends is pulling back the curtain on the 1995 slaying of Elyse Pahler, a 15-year-old freshman from the quiet coastal town of Arroyo Grande. Produced and narrated by actress Jennifer Love Hewitt, the series promises to unravel “secrets, suspicions, and betrayals” lurking in a seemingly ordinary friend group.
On a warm July night in 1995, Elyse Pahler’s life came to a brutal end in a eucalyptus grove just miles from her home. Authorities would later learn the terrifying truth: Elyse had been lured there by three classmates she thought she could trust—Royce Casey, 17, Joseph Fiorella, 15, and Jacob Delashmutt, 16.
Their motive? Prosecutors say the boys, obsessed with death metal music and the occult, believed a virgin “sacrifice” would grant them supernatural abilities—and help them become better musicians. The details are almost too disturbing to believe. According to court documents, Elyse was stabbed more than a dozen times in what the killers described as a pre-planned satanic ritual. Even more horrifying, police said the boys then committed further unspeakable acts with her body.
For months, Elyse’s disappearance haunted Arroyo Grande. Her family and investigators searched tirelessly, never imagining the gruesome reality. The break in the case came eight months later, when one of her killers, wracked with guilt, confessed. All three teens were convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to 25 years-to-life.
The case stunned the nation—not just for its brutality, but for the twisted rationale behind it. “They told us straight out, they believed if they sacrificed a virgin to the devil, they would get better at playing guitar,” a detective told the San Luis Obispo Tribune at the time. “It was like something out of a nightmare.”
Jennifer Love Hewitt, who produces and narrates A Killer Among Friends, told PEOPLE the series “offers a unique opportunity for me to draw from my own work as an actress, as we blend together a kaleidoscope of perspectives to tell each of these tragedies.” She added, “The stories we’re telling show how a single act can shatter everything a community thinks it knows about itself.”
Each episode features emotional interviews with investigators, friends, and family members, exposing the tangled web of secrecy and misplaced trust that allowed the killers to hide in plain sight. The network promises viewers will be “shocked by the betrayals and the unthinkable lengths to which some people will go.”
New episodes air Mondays at 10 p.m. ET on Investigation Discovery, with episodes available for streaming on HBO Max.
Nearly 30 years later, the murder of Elyse Pahler still echoes in Arroyo Grande. “No one could believe something like this could happen here,” a former classmate recalled. “It was evil, pure and simple—and we’re all still asking ourselves how we missed the signs.”
This is a case that continues to haunt. And now, thanks to Investigation Discovery’s new series, America is once again asking: how far can teenage darkness go before someone finally speaks up?
