Plane Crashes into Ocean Off California Coast — 1 Dead, 2 Missing as Debris Washes Ashore

A peaceful summer night turned tragic after a private aircraft plunged into the Pacific Ocean late Saturday, sparking a frantic multi-agency search effort and leaving one confirmed dead with two others feared lost at sea.

The twin-engine Beech 95-B55 was en route to Monterey Regional Airport when something went catastrophically wrong. The aircraft had taken off from San Carlos Airport at 10:07 p.m., but within just 30 minutes, its flight ended in disaster.

Flight data shows the plane made a strange loop near the quiet coastal community of Pacific Grove before veering back toward open water. At approximately 10:38 p.m., the aircraft entered a sharp descent and disappeared into the sea.

“The aircraft appeared to lose control during its final approach,” a source with the Aviation Safety Network said. “It briefly gained altitude before plunging into the ocean in a high-speed nosedive.”

Terrified locals say the night was pierced by the sound of a low-flying aircraft — followed by a bone-chilling splash.

“I was lying in bed when I heard a plane roaring just overhead,” said one resident on Facebook. “It sounded so low I thought it would hit the house. Then, silence. Then a huge splash.”

Another man told KION News he was jolted awake by the sound: “It felt like the plane was doing loops right over my roof. I thought I was dreaming—until I heard the crash.”

A full-scale search-and-rescue operation began within minutes. The Coast Guard, Pacific Grove Police, Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, CAL FIRE, and divers have all been deployed by land, sea, and air.

As dawn broke Sunday, the grim reality set in: rescuers had recovered one body from the water. Two others remain unaccounted for.

“This is no longer a rescue,” a KION reporter at the scene said somberly. “It’s a recovery.”

Coast Guard crews reported finding personal belongings, luggage, seat cushions, and aircraft debris washing up along the shoreline near Asilomar Beach—only a few hundred yards from where the plane went down.

Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the crash. The National Transportation Safety Board has launched an investigation and will begin analyzing recovered wreckage.

Experts say the plane’s erratic pattern and sudden drop suggest a possible mechanical failure or pilot disorientation. The flight occurred under night conditions with limited visibility near the coastline.

No distress signal was received before the crash, though FAA radar systems did trigger a lost contact alert just seconds before the crash.

The crash has stirred painful memories in Monterey County. In 1997, folk music legend John Denver died when his experimental aircraft crashed into nearby Monterey Bay.

“It’s haunting,” one longtime resident wrote online. “Almost the same area. Same kind of plane. Same eerie silence after.”

The identities of the three people on board have not yet been released pending family notification. All were believed to be adults. It is unclear if the flight was for business or personal travel.
