Gunman Opens Fire Inside NYC Building, Killing At Least One and Wounding Five Others

Gunman armed with rifle storms 52nd Street tower, turns weapon on himself after rampage

A deadly scene unfolded in the heart of Manhattan on Monday afternoon when a gunman armed with a rifle stormed a Midtown office building, killing one NYPD officer and injuring at least five others in a shocking burst of violence that sent one of the world’s busiest business districts into full lockdown.

The incident erupted just after 3 p.m. at 601 Lexington Avenue, a building that houses financial giant Blackstone and the NFL’s headquarters. According to law enforcement sources, the shooter began firing in the building’s lobby before moving to upper floors, shooting indiscriminately along the way. He ultimately made it to the 33rd floor, where he fatally shot himself.

“This was absolute chaos. Officers ran toward the gunfire without hesitation,” one NYPD official told our reporters. “There’s no doubt lives were saved because of their bravery.”

One officer was killed in the line of duty. Another NYPD officer—assigned to building security—was among the wounded. A building security guard was also shot. The names of the victims have not yet been released.

Video obtained by FOX 5 NY shows police carrying a wounded victim as sirens wail in the background. SWAT teams and emergency units poured into the scene as terrified employees barricaded themselves in offices, kitchens, and restrooms.

“We were told to lock the doors and stay down,” said Emily Zhang, a financial analyst who was working on the 17th floor when the gunfire began. “Everyone was crying, texting loved ones. It was terrifying.”

Mayor Eric Adams confirmed on X that the incident was an active shooter situation and urged New Yorkers to avoid the area around Park Avenue and 52nd Street.

“This is a dark day for our city,” Adams said. “One of our own has made the ultimate sacrifice, and we mourn with their family.”

The NYPD launched a floor-by-floor sweep of the building, concerned that there could be a second shooter. No additional suspects have been located, though authorities are not ruling out accomplices until the investigation is complete.

New York Attorney General Letitia James offered prayers for the victims, calling the attack “another painful reminder of the risks our law enforcement officers face every single day.”

The FBI has confirmed that agents from its New York Field Office were on the ground assisting the NYPD. “This is still a very active scene,” said FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino. “We’re here to support the NYPD. The motive remains unclear.”

Sources tell us that the shooter was not an employee of Blackstone or the NFL but may have entered the building using stolen credentials. Authorities are examining surveillance footage and digital evidence for more details.

Jay Clayton, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, has established a command center with federal and local agencies to coordinate the investigation.

The attack snarled traffic and shut down public transit routes around Midtown for several hours, adding to the chaos as rush hour began.

As of Monday evening, the area remained sealed off with heavy police presence. Officials expect to release more details following a scheduled press conference Tuesday morning.
