Fire Erupts as Lightning Strikes Down Wires Along Road in Shocking Incident (Video)

Dashcam video captured a dramatic moment in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, when a lightning strike lit up the sky, triggered a transformer explosion, and left drivers stunned.

The strike hit just before 11 a.m. on Monday, August 11, at the intersection of Highway 17 and Shelmore Boulevard in the seaside town outside Charleston. In the footage released by Mount Pleasant Police, a bolt of lightning flashes down, followed by a burst of fire and utility lines snapping on the opposite side of the highway.

“A bit too much excitement for a Monday,” the police department posted on X, noting the strike caused widespread power outages and major traffic delays.

No one was hurt, but the aftermath was chaotic. Downed wires closed parts of the road for hours while more than a dozen officers and sheriff’s deputies directed traffic at seven intersections. Dominion Energy crews rushed in to clear the debris and restore power.

The National Weather Service had warned of thunderstorms in the area that day — but few could have expected such a fiery, split-second spectacle in the middle of a busy road.
