The White House is going on the offensive after a Democratic whistleblower accused Sen. Adam Schiff of authorizing the leak of classified information to damage President Donald Trump during the height of the now-discredited Russiagate investigation.
Speaking from the podium, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt didn’t mince words.
“This is obviously a bombshell whistleblower report,” Leavitt said. “The American people deserve to know the truth. And hopefully more people in this room will cover it as such.”
According to a newly declassified FBI 302 document released by FBI Director Kash Patel, the whistleblower—a career intelligence officer who spent over a decade working for Democrats on the House Intelligence Committee—warned the Bureau in 2017 that Schiff had “green-lit” a plan to leak classified material derogatory to Trump.
The purpose, the whistleblower claims, was crystal clear: “It would be used to indict President Donald J. Trump.”
The testimony further alleges that when the whistleblower warned the scheme was illegal, meeting participants reassured him they “would not be caught.”
Schiff, a former House impeachment manager during Trump’s first term and a central figure in pushing the Russia-collusion narrative, has long been one of Trump’s fiercest antagonists. His relentless public claims that Trump’s 2016 campaign “coordinated” with Moscow have since been widely discredited by multiple investigations.
After decades in the House, Schiff was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2024. Now, alongside this leak allegation, he is also under a separate criminal probe for alleged mortgage fraud stretching back to the early 2000s—a charge he denies.
Leavitt read directly from Patel’s statement: “For years, certain officials used their positions to selectively leak classified information to shape political narratives. It was all done with one purpose: to weaponize intelligence and law enforcement for political gain.”
Patel vowed the FBI, alongside the Justice Department, will “uncover how political power may have been weaponized and restore accountability.”
When asked if President Trump intends to pursue Schiff, Leavitt reminded reporters: “The President has already said he wants to see Adam Schiff held accountable for the countless lies he told the American people in relation to the Russia hoax.”
Trump himself posted on Truth Social this morning, calling the allegation “further proof Schiff belongs behind bars” and adding, “The Russia Hoax was the biggest political scam in American history—and they got caught.”
Schiff’s office responded within hours, calling the claims a “smear” that is “absolutely and categorically false.” His spokesperson attacked the credibility of the whistleblower, labeling him a “disgruntled former staffer” fired in early 2017 “for harassment and potentially compromising activity on official travel.”
They pointed to past findings by Trump’s own Justice Department and an inspector general who concluded the whistleblower’s allegations “were not ultimately substantiated.”
This is not the first time major political figures have been accused of weaponizing the intelligence community. Just last month, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard declassified documents suggesting the Obama administration “manufactured and politicized” intelligence in late 2016 to create the Russia-collusion narrative against then-President-elect Trump.
Gabbard said the evidence was “overwhelming” that Obama officials, working with Clinton allies, laid the groundwork for years of investigations aimed at undermining Trump’s presidency.
Republicans on Capitol Hill are already signaling a full-scale probe. “This is the kind of abuse of power that shatters public trust in government,” Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) said Tuesday. “If proven, Schiff’s actions would make Watergate look like amateur hour.”
With the FBI and DOJ now on record promising a thorough review, and with Trump in the Oval Office once again, the question isn’t whether this battle will escalate—it’s how far and how fast.
