Denzel Washington Torches Cancel Culture: “I Follow God, Not Man”

Hollywood heavyweight Denzel Washington isn’t backing down in the war against cancel culture. In a fiery new interview, the Oscar-winning actor made it clear that his faith and values will never bend to the mob — no matter how many “followers” try to dictate the culture.

During a sit-down with Complex magazine, Washington was pressed about whether he fears being “canceled.” His response was blunt. “What does that mean — to be canceled? Who cares?” the 70-year-old actor shot back. “What made public support so important to begin with?”

When the interviewer argued that “followers are currency now,” Washington scoffed. “I don’t care who’s following who. You can’t lead and follow at the same time. I follow the heavenly spirit. I follow God. I have faith in God, I have hope in man, but look around — it ain’t working out so well.”

Washington, known for classics like Training Day and Glory, urged Americans not to get sucked into the cancel culture machine. “You can’t be canceled if you haven’t signed up. Don’t sign up,” he warned, laughing so hard that he admitted, “My chest started hurting just talking about it.”

Director Spike Lee, seated next to him, backed Washington’s remarks with a dismissive, “I could care less.”

Washington has long stood out in Hollywood as a man of conviction. In an industry dominated by left-wing politics and social media-driven outrage, he has consistently leaned on his Christian faith rather than Hollywood trends. “I don’t follow man,” he repeated firmly. “I follow God.”

This message resonates with millions of Americans today — especially as President Trump continues his second term pushing back against what he calls “radical woke censorship.” Washington’s stance mirrors the broader fight over free speech and faith in America.

Even while rejecting the industry’s obsession with social approval, Washington continues to rack up accolades. Earlier this year, he earned his 11th Golden Globe nomination for his role in Gladiator II, setting a record as the Black actor with the most nominations in Golden Globe history. He later won the award for Best Supporting Actor, playing Macrinus in the blockbuster hit.

Rumors of retirement have swirled for years, but Washington insists he’s not done. “I didn’t say I was retiring. I said the work has to be worth my time,” he explained. “I look at life in three stages: you learn, you earn, you return. I’m in the return part of life now.”

At a time when Hollywood’s biggest stars often cave to online pressure, Washington’s refusal to bow to cancel culture is a reminder that real leadership doesn’t come from chasing approval — it comes from standing on principle.

As Washington put it best: “Don’t follow the crowd. Don’t sign up. Follow God.”
