Russian President Vladimir Putin couldn’t hide his irritation Friday when reporters swarmed him and President Donald Trump with questions at a tense U.S.-Russia summit in Alaska.
The former KGB strongman, known for his icy composure, appeared visibly annoyed as cameras rolled. Trump, by contrast, looked unfazed. For him, this was just another day of battling the press.
The summit, held at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, was billed as one of the most important U.S.-Russia meetings in years. At the center of it all: the bloody war in Ukraine and the world’s growing impatience for peace.
Trump told Fox News’ Sean Hannity the meeting was “very good” and that Putin “wants to see it done.” Still, no deal was reached. The sticking points remain under wraps.
European leaders rushed to praise Trump for moving negotiations forward. In a rare joint statement, French President Emmanuel Macron, U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz applauded Trump’s efforts to “end Russia’s war of aggression” and demanded “ironclad” security guarantees for Ukraine.
One diplomat in Brussels told Reuters, “The world is watching Trump and Putin. Whether we like it or not, Trump is now in the driver’s seat.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who was not invited to Alaska, is preparing for his own critical meeting with Trump in Washington on Monday.
“We will discuss all of the details regarding ending the killing and the war,” Zelenskyy wrote on X.
Behind the scenes, Zelenskyy has urged Trump to tighten sanctions if Putin stalls. Trump echoed that sentiment, warning Russia would face “very severe” economic consequences if it derailed progress.
Even Trump’s former rival, Hillary Clinton, acknowledged the gravity of the moment. “If he secures a ceasefire, I’d nominate him for the Nobel Peace Prize,” she said earlier this week.
Vice President JD Vance has also been active, joining Zelenskyy and European leaders in a “Coalition of the Willing” meeting ahead of the summit.
For now, there is no ceasefire. But Trump insists momentum is building. “We’re closer than ever,” he told Hannity.
Putin, however, has refused to commit to a three-way summit with Trump and Zelenskyy. His frosty demeanor in Alaska hinted at the uphill battle still ahead.
The world now waits for Monday, when Trump and Zelenskyy sit face-to-face in Washington — and the fate of the war could shift again.
