A Northern Virginia school board meeting exploded into chaos Thursday night when a racist sign targeting Republican gubernatorial candidate Winsome Earle-Sears was displayed outside the venue — setting off a wave of bipartisan outrage and reigniting the culture wars surrounding transgender bathroom policies in public schools.
The sign, scrawled in bold black letters, read: “Hey Winsome, if trans can’t share your bathroom, then blacks can’t share my water fountain.”
Shock and Condemnation
Earle-Sears, a Marine veteran, immigrant, and sitting lieutenant governor, called the attack “disgusting, but not surprising,” blasting Democrats for what she described as “a climate of division.”
“This is the so-called ‘tolerant’ left Abigail Spanberger defends,” Earle-Sears told reporters. “I’m the sitting lieutenant governor, second in command of the former capital of the Confederacy. I’m a Black woman, an immigrant, a Marine, and a human being. There is no place for this disgusting hatred in our Commonwealth.”
Earle-Sears added a sharp warning: “Anyone who refuses to condemn this sign is complicit in supporting it.”
Her running mate, GOP lieutenant governor candidate John Reid, went further, accusing Democrats of fueling racial tensions for political gain.
“This is the climate Democrats created,” Reid said. “Smear, divide, then look the other way when it turns ugly. That sign is where their politics of resentment leads.”
Democrats Distance Themselves
Even Earle-Sears’ Democratic opponent, former Rep. Abigail Spanberger, couldn’t defend the incident. She called the sign “racist and abhorrent” in a statement Friday morning.
“Many Virginians remember the segregated water fountains, buses, schools, and neighborhoods of Virginia’s not-so-distant past,” Spanberger said. “No matter how much one disagrees with another’s beliefs, threatening a return to Jim Crow-era segregation — especially aimed at a Black woman — is unacceptable. Full stop.”
Spanberger’s running mate, state senator Ghazala Hashmi, echoed the sentiment, calling the sign “unacceptable” and “a painful reminder of our country’s darkest chapters.”
Battle Over Bathrooms
The confrontation comes as Northern Virginia finds itself at the epicenter of a growing national battle over transgender bathroom and locker room access.
Just days before the incident, the federal Department of Education labeled five Northern Virginia schools “high-risk” and placed restrictions on their federal funding after the districts refused to comply with the Trump administration’s Title IX guidance requiring schools to separate bathrooms and locker rooms by biological sex.
Adding fuel to the fire, two male students were recently suspended in Fairfax County after objecting to a biological female — who identifies as male — using the boys’ locker room. School administrators accused the boys of “sexual harassment” for speaking out.
The students have since filed a Title IX appeal, which has temporarily paused their suspensions.
Education Secretary Linda McMahon addressed the controversy Friday, pledging to enforce federal law.
“Schools don’t get to pick and choose which laws they follow,” McMahon said on The Faulkner Focus. “We will make sure that school districts are protecting students’ rights and abiding by the law — period.”
High Stakes for Virginia’s Election
The scandal could become a defining flashpoint in Virginia’s gubernatorial race.
Earle-Sears has built her campaign around parental rights, school safety, and rolling back “radical gender ideology” in classrooms — positions that have energized the Republican base but drawn fierce backlash from progressive groups.
“This race is about restoring sanity in our schools and protecting our children,” Earle-Sears said Thursday night. “Virginians are tired of being bullied by bureaucrats and activists who think they know better than parents.”
With polls showing Earle-Sears and Spanberger neck-and-neck, the controversy over transgender policies — now entangled with racially charged attacks — threatens to reshape the battle for Virginia’s future.

Lt. Governor Winsome Earle-Sears, a decorated Marine and honest politician, should not have to \”be used\” to this sort of hate speech. The idiot(s) that had this sign should have been made to put it in a trashcan and leave the area. They have nothing positive to contribute to society.
Ignore the crackpot holding up the sign. They’re like sand fleas. They’re an annoyance and just a part of every day life today. They’re so screwed up in the head that they can’t differentiate male from female and certainly don’t reflect the opinions of the majority of citizens. The newness of their actions/protests has worn off and they’ve become little more than background noise in the lives of normal Americans.
