Republicans Blast “Rot in the Party” as Trump Era Push for Accountability Grows
Virginia’s Democratic leadership is closing ranks behind attorney general candidate Jay Jones — even after shocking text messages surfaced showing him wishing death on the children of a Republican lawmaker.
The messages, sent in 2022, show Jones — then a rising Democratic star from Norfolk — telling a colleague that he hoped the children of former GOP House Speaker Todd Gilbert would die. Jones allegedly went further, writing that such a tragedy might “be a good thing” if it helped his political goals.
The discovery ignited outrage across Virginia and the nation — yet most Democratic officials have remained silent.
Only Democratic gubernatorial candidate Abigail Spanberger broke ranks, calling the language “violent and wrong.” Still, she stopped short of demanding Jones withdraw. “I will always condemn violent language in our politics,” she said in a statement Saturday. “I’ve spoken frankly with Jay about the seriousness of these words.”
Democrats Dig In, Republicans Demand Accountability
While Jones issued an apology — calling the remarks “embarrassing and shameful” — his local party refused to back down. The Virginia Beach Democratic Committee declared its full support, writing, “We are lined up, ten toes down, ready to organize, mobilize and deliver voters for Jay and our entire Democratic ticket.”
The statement went on to excuse the comments as “past mistakes,” invoking a biblical phrase: “Let those without sin cast the first stone.”
Republicans immediately seized on the response as proof of moral rot within the Democratic Party.
“Jay Jones has shown he’s reckless, biased, and willing to trade away his integrity,” Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares said in a fiery open letter to Virginians posted on X. “If you believe it’s okay to wish death on your political opponent’s children, vote for him. If not, vote for decency.”
Miyares added that as Virginia’s top law enforcement officer, he would “protect every Virginian — Democrat or Republican — from the kind of hate that nearly destroyed our country in the 2020s.”
Winsome Sears: “The Enemy Is Among Us”
Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears, a Marine veteran and one of the GOP’s most powerful voices, gave a blistering response during a rally in Richmond on Saturday.
“The enemy is among us, devouring us in Virginia and in America today,” Sears declared. “Jay Jones fantasizes about murdered little children lying lifeless in their mothers’ arms — and yet he wants to be our chief law enforcement officer. That tells you everything about where the modern Democratic Party stands.”
Her comments were met with cheers from hundreds of conservatives waving “Protect Our Kids” and “Stop the Hate” signs.
A Pattern of Political Violence
The controversy comes amid a troubling national trend of violent rhetoric and left-wing extremism. In just the last year, federal authorities have foiled two assassination plots against President Donald Trump, while conservative activist Charlie Kirk was murdered outside a political event in Florida — acts Republicans say were fueled by anti-conservative hate.
“The pattern is clear,” political analyst Rachel Hartman told The Federal Ledger. “You demonize your opponents long enough, and eventually someone takes it literally.”
Youngkin Calls for Jones to Step Down
Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin weighed in early Saturday, demanding Jones suspend his campaign immediately.
“This violent, disgusting rhetoric targeted at an elected official and his children is beyond disqualifying,” Youngkin said. “Anyone who talks this way has no business anywhere near law enforcement.”
As of Sunday morning, Jones remained in the race — with the Democratic establishment standing by him, leaving voters to decide whether forgiveness or accountability will prevail this November.
