Plane Flips Over During Landing at Small Massachusetts Airport

A terrifying crash at Fitchburg Airport turned a routine landing into a heart-stopping ordeal Saturday morning when a small plane flipped upside down on the runway — leaving the pilot injured and sparking chaos on the ground.

The accident happened just after 10 a.m. as the pilot attempted to land a Cessna 170, a single-engine, four-seat aircraft, on a runway near Crawford Street. According to Fitchburg Fire, a sudden shift in the wind — from a steady headwind to a powerful crosswind — caused the plane to lose balance and violently flip onto its roof.

Witnesses say the landing looked normal at first before disaster struck. “One second, the plane was gliding in — the next, it was upside down,” one bystander said. “It was terrifying to watch.”

The pilot, who had flown in from Sterling Airport to refuel, miraculously escaped with only minor injuries. Fitchburg Airport manager Peter Kettle confirmed that the pilot suffered scratches and was taken to the hospital for evaluation. His name has not been released. No one else was onboard the aircraft.

Authorities temporarily closed Fitchburg Airport following the crash as emergency crews secured the wreckage. Both the FAA and MassDOT have been notified and are investigating the incident.

While shocking, this isn’t the first time strong winds have flipped a small plane in New England. In May 2024, a Massachusetts college student piloting a Bridgewater State University-owned aircraft was caught in a sudden gust in Maine, causing that plane to overturn during landing.

Experts warn that smaller planes like the Cessna 170 are especially vulnerable to abrupt changes in crosswinds, making safe landings a high-stakes challenge.

Located about 50 miles northwest of Boston, Fitchburg Airport has served pilots since opening in June 1929. Primarily used by small aircraft, it also hosts flight schools, charter services, and maintenance facilities. While it’s considered a hub for aspiring pilots, Saturday’s incident highlights the dangers that can unfold in seconds when weather conditions turn unpredictable.

Officials have not said how long the runway closures will last, but investigators from the FAA are expected to examine everything from mechanical issues to wind conditions leading up to the crash.

For now, one thing is certain: a routine landing quickly became a nightmare — and this close call could easily have ended in tragedy.
