A 99-year-old blind woman’s dream of celebrating her 100th birthday was tragically cut short after a devastating nursing home incident involving a cup of hot tea.
Margaret Eluned Roberts, a beloved great-grandmother from Wales, suffered severe burns when a cup of tea spilled onto her leg at the Glan Rhos nursing home on September 22, 2024. Despite being rushed to Ysbyty Gwynedd Hospital and receiving treatment, Roberts developed complications from the burn and died just over a month later, on October 28.
Roberts’ daughter, Linda Pritchard, spoke through tears after an inquest revealed her mother’s final wishes.
“She always said she wanted to reach 100,” Pritchard said. “She’d been talking about her birthday for years. It would have been such a significant milestone for her — and now it’s been taken away.”
Kate Robertson, senior coroner for northwest Wales, ruled the death an “accident” but emphasized that the injury set off a chain of medical events. The official cause of death was listed as pneumonia and cellulitis triggered by the burn, with old age, asthma, and heart disease as contributing factors.
According to testimony from healthcare assistant Sarah Thomas, Roberts, who was blind, insisted on drinking her tea without help.
“She was very independent,” Thomas said. “She wanted to hold the cup herself.”
Moments later, Roberts spilled the boiling liquid on her leg. Nurse Jo Reavey described finding the elderly woman “distraught with her arms raised,” her skin badly burned.
After initial treatment at the hospital, Roberts was transferred back to the nursing home, only to be readmitted days later when her condition worsened.
Despite the coroner’s ruling, the incident has sparked debate about safety standards in nursing homes and how facilities care for vulnerable residents. Advocates argue that stricter guidelines should be in place to prevent similar tragedies.
Neither the Glan Rhos nursing home nor Ysbyty Gwynedd Hospital has responded to requests for comment.
For Roberts’ family, the loss is immeasurable.
“She survived so much in her life,” Pritchard said. “To lose her like this — over a cup of tea — it’s heartbreaking.”
