Trump White House Denies Involvement as FCC Defends Kimmel Ban Over Disinformation Following Kirk Assassination Remarks
Kamala Harris is suddenly worried about free speech—just not when it comes to conservatives.
The former vice president and 2024 Democratic nominee erupted online this week over ABC’s stunning decision to suspend Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night show after the host accused Trump supporters of exploiting the assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk.
“Outright abuse of power,” Harris cried on X (formerly Twitter), accusing the Trump administration of “silencing critics” and warning Americans not to be “complacent” in the face of what she called an “attack on free speech.”
But one user wasn’t having it—Elon Musk.
The X CEO fired back by resurfacing a 2019 tweet from Harris herself, where she publicly called for then-President Trump to be banned from Twitter.
“Let’s be honest, @realDonaldTrump’s Twitter account should be suspended,” Harris wrote on Sept. 30, 2019.
Musk reposted the tweet Friday with a single emoji: 🤔
The message was clear—Kamala Harris was all for censorship when it targeted Donald Trump. Now, she’s suddenly championing the First Amendment?
Kimmel, 57, was pulled off the air by ABC “indefinitely” after an explosive monologue about the tragic assassination of Charlie Kirk, who was gunned down earlier this month during a Turning Point campus event in Utah.
Rather than offering condolences, Kimmel mocked conservatives for “trying to score political points” by connecting the shooter to left-wing extremism—even though the indictment explicitly cites the killer’s ties to radical organizations.
“The MAGA gang is reaching new lows,” Kimmel said, triggering an avalanche of backlash from viewers, station affiliates, and parent company Disney.
Shortly after, dozens of ABC affiliates—including Nexstar and Sinclair groups—announced they would no longer air Jimmy Kimmel Live! pending an FCC review.
FCC Chairman Brendan Carr, appointed by President Trump and confirmed by the Senate last year, defended the move during an interview on Hannity.
“Broadcast television has a public interest obligation,” Carr said. “Lying to the American people about the nature of political violence—on prime time—is not in the public interest.”
Carr clarified that the FCC did not order Kimmel’s removal but praised the affiliates that did so voluntarily.
“Local stations stood up for their communities. That’s the opposite of censorship.”
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt addressed the controversy during a Saturday press conference, making it clear the Trump administration had no involvement in ABC’s internal decision.
“This was a corporate decision by ABC. The White House was not involved, and President Trump did not request it,” Leavitt stated.
The message? Kimmel got canned because Americans are tired of late-night political hit jobs, not because of government pressure.
Many Republicans, including Sen. Josh Hawley and Rep. Byron Donalds, applauded Kimmel’s removal, pointing to years of anti-Trump rhetoric and “comedy” that often veered into misinformation.
But even Sen. Ted Cruz issued a cautionary note.
“Be careful what you wish for,” Cruz warned on his Verdict podcast. “Because if conservatives start policing speech too aggressively, it might come back around.”
Still, Cruz agreed that Kimmel’s monologue about the Kirk assassination crossed a line.
“He was lying. Flat-out. That’s not free speech—it’s deception.”
Harris’ free speech rant is just the latest in a long line of Democratic reversals on censorship.
Under the Biden-Harris administration, social media platforms were routinely pressured to remove posts that challenged COVID-19 narratives or questioned vaccine mandates.
In 2021, then-press secretary Jen Psaki openly admitted the White House was “flagging posts for Facebook.”
And in 2024, just before the election, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg confirmed in a letter to Congress that the Biden administration had pressured Facebook to censor Americans during the pandemic.
“We were wrong to comply,” Zuckerberg wrote in a letter to Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan. “That will not happen again.”
Kamala Harris wants free speech—but only for people who agree with her. When Trump tweeted, she wanted him silenced. When Kimmel spreads disinformation about a murdered conservative icon, she cries foul.
But the American people are no longer buying the double standard.
As Elon Musk made clear with just one emoji, receipts never lie.
