Passengers on a British Airways flight from London to Nigeria were thrown into panic Monday morning when a retired Nigerian Air Force marshal suddenly died mid-flight — forcing the plane to divert to Spain for an emergency landing and leaving one pregnant passenger in distress.
The victim, Air Vice Marshal (Ret.) Osita Obierika, reportedly fell critically ill just two and a half hours after takeoff from Heathrow Airport on Sunday night. He was on his way home to Abuja after undergoing cancer treatment in the UK, according to Nigerian outlets Vanguard and Daily Trust.
“He’d been in London for several weeks for medical care,” a family acquaintance told local reporters. “No one expected this to happen on his way home.”
The 80-year-old former commander’s sudden collapse set off chaos aboard the packed flight. Witnesses said passengers screamed and rushed toward the aisles as crew members called for medical professionals on board.
“It was terrifying — one minute it was calm, the next everyone was panicking,” said one passenger, who asked not to be named. “The cabin crew did their best, but it felt like no one knew what was happening.”
The pilot declared a medical emergency and diverted the plane to Barcelona’s El Prat Airport around 1:30 a.m. local time.
However, the tense scene worsened as reports emerged that a pregnant woman on board suffered a medical episode amid the chaos. British media said her condition remains unclear, though emergency responders were waiting on the tarmac when the jet touched down.
British Airways confirmed the diversion in a statement:
“Due to a medical emergency on board, our flight from London to Abuja was diverted to Barcelona. We apologize to customers for the delay and thank them for their understanding.”
A replacement aircraft was sent to complete the journey to Abuja. Originally scheduled to land in Nigeria by 5 a.m., the new plane didn’t depart Spain until nearly 3 p.m. local time, touching down in Abuja around 5:45 p.m.
Passengers were offered compensation and assistance through the airline’s Live Chat service.
This isn’t an isolated incident. In July, a Turkish Airlines passenger traveling from Istanbul to Los Angeles died of what officials called “a severe medical emergency.” The crew initially planned an emergency stop in Iceland but instead continued to Chicago after the man passed away mid-flight.
Aviation experts note that when a death occurs onboard, crews are instructed to find a suitable airport rather than the nearest one. “The priority shifts from immediate medical care to handling the remains and supporting passengers safely,” said an aviation safety consultant with FlightGlobal.
Air Vice Marshal Obierika served the Nigerian Air Force for decades, commanding several strategic units before retiring in the early 2000s. Colleagues described him as “a disciplined officer and a gentleman devoted to national service.”
His body was handed over to Nigerian officials after landing in Spain, according to reports.
“This is a sad loss for the military family,” a former Air Force colleague said. “He was on his way home, and fate had other plans.”
