What began as a routine flight from Chicago to Mexico ended in heartbreak after a 79-year-old woman died midair, forcing an emergency landing in northern Mexico.
According to reports, Volaris Flight 7771 had departed from Chicago Midway International Airport on Saturday and was headed to General Francisco Mujica International Airport when passengers suddenly noticed a woman in medical distress.
Travelers quickly alerted flight attendants and the pilot after the elderly passenger reportedly became seriously ill shortly after the aircraft entered Mexican airspace. The crew immediately diverted the flight to Monterrey International Airport so emergency responders could rush onboard.
But despite the emergency landing, it was too late.
Medical personnel pronounced the woman dead moments after the plane touched down. She was later identified as María Yolando Guerrero Medina, who was reportedly traveling with her husband at the time of the tragedy.
Reports say Guerrero Medina had battled kidney failure and diabetes for more than a decade. The shocking medical emergency left fellow passengers shaken as authorities responded on the tarmac.
After the incident, the airline reportedly brought in another aircraft so passengers could continue their journey to Michoacán.
The frightening incident came just one day before another emergency unfolded at the same Mexican airport.
On Sunday, a United Airlines flight traveling from Los Cabos to Houston was also forced to make an emergency landing at Monterrey International Airport after experiencing a mechanical problem shortly after takeoff.
While no injuries were reported in that incident, the back-to-back emergency landings raised fresh concerns among travelers after a weekend of chaos in the skies.
