Desperate North Koreans Forced to Cook ‘Tigers and Badgers’ Amid Starvation

North Koreans are reportedly turning to hunting and eating wild animals like tigers, badgers, and bears in a desperate attempt to survive as food shortages and systemic collapse continue to plague the isolated country. Years of famine, economic isolation, and the breakdown of government-controlled supply chains have pushed people to the edge — and far beyond traditional dietary norms.

While Kim Jong-un continues to live in luxury, ordinary citizens are scavenging for anything that can be eaten. According to interviews with dozens of defectors, almost every animal larger than a hedgehog is being hunted for food or trade. From former soldiers to black-market traders, many described a country where survival has overridden all taboos.

What began in the 1990s during a nationwide famine has evolved into a thriving underground wildlife trade. Even after economic conditions saw modest improvements, hunting remained rampant. Bears, otters, deer, and even protected species are being captured or raised at state-run farms — not just for food, but for their body parts, which are often trafficked across the border into China.

Researchers say there are now almost no boundaries. Once-rare or sacred animals are now being eaten or sold. Entire ecosystems are being emptied out. The tiger, a creature once symbolic and protected, is no longer off-limits.

This disturbing shift isn’t just about hunger — it’s about survival in a state where people feel abandoned, and where the natural world has become a last-resort lifeline.

    1. When saying voters of New York, be careful to say new York City. Most of the New Yorkers I know from upstate, are decent hard working people who do not want, in any way, to be confused with the down state city having the same name.
