Kamala Harris Says Biden Sent Her to Voicemail After Cancer News Broke

Kamala Harris says she tried to reach out to Joe Biden after learning about his radiation treatment — but the former president sent her to voicemail.

“I called him earlier,” Harris told MSNBC’s The Weekend in an interview that aired Sunday. “I have not talked to him. I just left him a message after I heard the news.”

Despite the missed connection, Harris had kind words for her former running mate. “I think Joe Biden is a fighter, and that’s what I told him,” she said. “He’s going to fight this, and we’re going to hold him up and pray for his recovery, his strength, and for his family.”

Biden’s team revealed Saturday that he’s undergoing a five-week course of radiation therapy for an aggressive form of prostate cancer, which had metastasized to his bones. The treatment comes on top of hormone therapy he was already receiving. According to his office, he’s “doing well.”

The health update comes amid a complicated moment in the political relationship between Biden and Harris.

Just last month, Harris released her memoir 107 Days, a candid account of her brief and dramatic 2024 presidential campaign. In the book, she didn’t hold back, slamming Biden’s decision to seek re-election as “reckless” and detailing tense moments between them — including one instance where Biden reportedly accused her of badmouthing him to donors ahead of her debate with Donald Trump.

When asked on MSNBC whether she’d talked to Biden about the book, Harris smiled and said, “I’m not going to tell you.”

The former president, who largely stayed out of the spotlight after dropping out of the 2024 race, has reportedly clashed with other top Democrats as well — including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi — over how his campaign ended. Many in the party privately blamed him for weakening the Democratic ticket and contributing to Trump’s comeback win.

While Harris stayed relatively quiet about Biden during her short-lived campaign, she’s since joined a growing number of Democrats publicly questioning his judgment in running again.

On MSNBC, she also offered surprisingly measured praise for Trump over his role in a potential peace deal between Israel and Hamas.

“I don’t think we should hold in credit where it’s due,” she said. “I hope the deal becomes real, that the hostages are out, and that Gaza is no longer being treated with such brutality of force, and that aid goes in.”

She added, “I commend the people who’ve been part of this process — the Qataris, the Egyptians, and the president.”

Though Harris gave no real update on the current state of her relationship with Biden, her recent media appearances and memoir make it clear: whatever alliance once existed has cooled — and fast.
