Former White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre says she left the Democratic Party in disgust after watching top Democrats force President Biden out of the 2024 race. In her new memoir, she exposes internal chaos, elite backstabbing, and what she calls a “firing squad” aimed at the man she once fiercely defended.

In a stunning rebuke of her former party, Karine Jean-Pierre—the historic first Black and openly gay White House press secretary—has officially cut ties with the Democrats. The longtime party operative announced she’s now an Independent, calling out what she describes as the Democrats’ betrayal of Joe Biden.

“I don’t think I can stomach being in the Democratic Party anymore,” she writes in her new memoir Independent, released this week.

According to Jean-Pierre, the final straw came in July 2024, when top Democrats turned on President Biden and pressured him to drop out of the race following his underwhelming debate performance against now-President Donald Trump.

“It was a firing squad,” Jean-Pierre recalls. “They lined up behind closed doors and unloaded on a man who gave 50 years of his life to serving this country. And they did it without remorse.”

Jean-Pierre gives a behind-the-scenes account of the phone call where Biden informed his White House staff that he was stepping aside.

“Biden seemed to be totally at peace with his decision, but I was stunned. Angry. Heartbroken,” she writes. “This wasn’t just a political shift. This was the death of loyalty.”

Despite her public efforts to defend Biden’s mental and physical fitness, Jean-Pierre now admits that the president’s decline was real—and costly.

“I never thought he’d actually walk away,” she says. “But once the party turned on him, there was no coming back.”

Jean-Pierre, who served in both the Obama and Biden administrations and was once hailed as the future of the Democratic Party, says she now feels like she was a pawn in a machine more focused on optics than values.

“Everything I had done—every campaign, every policy speech, every press briefing—was tied to the Democratic Party. But when push came to shove, they threw us all under the bus.”

She admits she originally planned to debut her next chapter on the liberal talk show The View, but says a growing “cloud of unease” pushed her to do more than just explain her grief.

“I wanted to fight. Not for a party. But for what’s right.”

While Jean-Pierre doesn’t name names, her book strongly suggests that Democratic elites—operatives and strategists she once worked beside—acted ruthlessly to replace Biden with a younger, more ‘electable’ figure.

Political insiders say Vice President Kamala Harris was among those lobbying behind the scenes for a leadership change. According to sources close to the administration, Harris privately complained that Biden’s communications team had left her “out to dry” in major moments—fueling speculation of internal division long before the public fallout.

Before her time at the podium, Jean-Pierre worked on campaigns for John Edwards, Barack Obama, and Martin O’Malley, and was a political analyst for MSNBC. Her rise was seen as emblematic of the Democratic Party’s push for inclusion.

But now, she’s using her platform to shine a light on what she describes as the party’s toxic inner culture.

“I believed in the mission. But somewhere along the way, the mission got hijacked,” she says. “This party doesn’t just eat its own—it devours them.”

While Jean-Pierre is clearly loyal to Biden, she insists her departure from the party is about more than one man.

“I didn’t leave the Democratic Party because of one debate or one election. I left because I refuse to pledge blind loyalty to a movement that’s lost its soul.”

Jean-Pierre’s departure is one of several high-profile cracks in the Democratic Party’s facade following Trump’s sweeping victory in the 2024 election. With Biden out, Harris struggling to consolidate support, and independents drifting right, the party is in a full-blown identity crisis.

“Americans are tired of the games,” Jean-Pierre says. “And so am I.”
