Frankston, Australia – A powerful weather system tore across southeastern Australia this week, leaving two men dead after they were swept from a seaside pier and into raging waters in what officials are calling a “harrowing reminder of nature’s strength.”
The tragedy unfolded late Wednesday, Oct. 22, as violent winds battered the coastal town of Frankston, about 25 miles southeast of Melbourne. Around 5 p.m. local time, emergency crews were called to Frankston Beach after reports surfaced that two men had been swept into the ocean during the storm.
Within minutes, a police Air Wing helicopter spotted the men floating unresponsive in the churning surf. Rescuers winched both victims to shore, but despite frantic efforts to revive them, neither survived.
“It all happened so fast,” said a witness who was walking along the beach when the storm rolled in. “The wind picked up, the waves were massive. You could barely stand straight.”
Authorities have not yet released the men’s names pending notification of their families.
Frankston City Mayor Kris Bolam described the conditions as “extreme” and said the victims were “swept from the Frankston Pier during violent gusts.”
“This is a sharp reminder of the power of nature and the real risk posed by severe weather,” Bolam said in a statement shared by the Frankston City Council. “On behalf of our entire community, I extend our deepest condolences to their families, friends, and loved ones. We share in your grief and stand with you during this heartbreaking time.”
Bolam thanked emergency personnel who risked their lives in what he called “a courageous rescue effort under impossible conditions.”
Meteorologists say the incident occurred during a major weather outbreak that swept through Victoria as a deep low-pressure system pushed east through Bass Strait. According to Australia’s ABC News, gusts reached up to 81 miles per hour southeast of Melbourne — strong enough to topple trees, damage homes, and whip up dangerous surf along the coast.
The Bureau of Meteorology had issued warnings earlier that day for “rough seas, dangerous waves, and powerful gusts,” urging residents and beachgoers to stay away from piers and shorelines.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, local officials say they’re stepping up beach safety measures as summer approaches.
“We’ll be enhancing patrols along the beach, pier, and foreshore areas,” Bolam said. “That includes more lifeguard hours, increased signage around hazardous conditions, and better communication when access should be restricted. Our aim is always to keep people safe — especially when conditions can change so quickly.”
The devastating accident has left the Frankston community shaken. Floral tributes have begun appearing near the pier, where locals gathered Thursday morning to pay their respects.
“It’s heartbreaking,” said resident Claire Donnelly. “We come here every day to walk our dogs or fish off the pier. To think that two people lost their lives here — it just makes you realize how fragile life can be.”
