Charlie Kirk’s Alleged Assassin Trial Chaos: Judge Ridiculed for Allowing Request

The murder case of conservative activist Charlie Kirk took a bizarre turn this week after a Utah judge ruled that the accused shooter, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, may appear in civilian clothing during his court hearings — a decision that’s sparked outrage online and renewed debate over courtroom bias.

Judge Tony Graf’s ruling came Monday, granting Robinson the right to wear regular clothes instead of a jail jumpsuit at pre-trial hearings and during his trial. The judge cited “a significant risk of prejudice” if jurors or the public saw Robinson in inmate attire, given the “extraordinary media attention” surrounding the case.

However, the court denied Robinson’s request to appear without restraints — a partial victory that many critics called “tone-deaf.”

“The idea that this man—accused of killing one of America’s most recognizable conservative voices—should be presented as anything other than a violent criminal is absurd,” said one Utah resident on X, formerly Twitter. “This isn’t a fashion show.”

Robinson’s attorney, Keith Johnson, told reporters the ruling was fair and necessary to ensure a fair trial.

“In many courtrooms across the country, judges recognize the prejudice jurors may associate with jail clothing,” Johnson said. “Given the nature of this case, the public already knows he’s in custody. What matters now is whether the evidence supports the charges.”

He added, “This will ultimately come down to proof — whether he was there, whether there’s a defense, or an alibi that clears him.”

Prosecutors allege Robinson meticulously planned the September 10 assassination of Charlie Kirk, 31, the outspoken founder of Turning Point USA and one of President Donald Trump’s closest allies in the conservative movement.

Investigators say Robinson positioned himself on the rooftop of a Utah Valley University building before firing a single, fatal shot with a long-range rifle as Kirk debated students in the campus quad below. The harrowing scene was captured on dozens of cell phone videos and livestreams, quickly going viral worldwide.

Robinson was arrested three days later in Provo. He faces charges of first-degree murder and is eligible for the death penalty, prosecutors confirmed.

Court documents reveal that Robinson, once a trade school student, had become “increasingly hostile toward conservative figures.” His mother told investigators her son had “rejected his upbringing” and grown “deeply influenced by left-wing ideology” after entering an online community that promoted anti-MAGA rhetoric.

Messages allegedly sent to Robinson’s lover, Lance Twiggs — who was transitioning at the time — included chilling admissions. “I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk and I’m going to take it,” one message read. When Twiggs asked why, Robinson allegedly replied, “I’ve had enough of his hatred. Some hate can’t be negotiated out.”

The murder sent shockwaves through the conservative movement and the nation. President Donald Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance, and nearly the entire Trump Cabinet attended Kirk’s massive memorial service on September 21 at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. Turning Point USA reported that over 100 million people tuned in to watch the livestream.

Trump, in his eulogy, called Kirk “a patriot who spoke for those forgotten by the elites” and vowed justice would be swift. “We will never forget Charlie,” he said. “And we will never forgive the evil that took him from us.”

As the trial looms, public debate over whether Robinson should be allowed to appear in civilian clothing reflects a deeper divide — one over fairness, symbolism, and justice in America’s most politically explosive murder case in years.

  1. They should put him in civilian clothes…the ones he was arrested in. Make his clothing match that of the murderer he is.

  2. The judge needs to be removed immediately and a real thinking judge needs to step in. This guy is a cold blooded murderer ! He took a gentle honest man away from his family and all of us. Where are the logical people?
