Newly revealed surveillance footage showing accused killer Tyler Robinson’s movements on the day conservative activist Charlie Kirk was fatally shot was played in court Tuesday, despite a last-minute effort by the defense to keep the video from being shown.
Judge Tony Graf allowed prosecutors to present the footage during the second day of Robinson’s preliminary hearing on July 7, giving the courtroom its clearest look yet at what authorities claim happened before and after Kirk’s killing.
Former Utah State Bureau of Investigation agent David Hull walked the court through the video while testifying on the stand.
According to Hull, the footage shows Robinson driving into a parking garage, walking away from the area, returning and eventually leaving again. Robinson can then allegedly be seen climbing over a railing and making his way onto a rooftop.
Hull testified that Robinson crouched down before running toward a position overlooking the area where Kirk was speaking that day.
Kirk, the 31-year-old founder of Turning Point USA and a prominent conservative podcaster, was shot and killed at Utah Valley University on Sept. 10, 2025.
Prosecutors allege Robinson drove approximately three hours from his home to the university campus with the intention of killing Kirk.
The footage reportedly shows Robinson running back across the rooftop after the shooting, dropping down to the ground and fleeing the area on foot.
The dramatic courtroom presentation came as prosecutors continued trying to convince the judge that they have enough evidence to move the case forward to trial.
The second day of testimony followed an emotional opening day for Kirk’s widow, Erika Kirk, who was seated inside the courtroom.
Erika reportedly began sobbing before the hearing started and later left the room as a police officer described the graphic circumstances surrounding her husband’s death.
Robinson, 23, has not yet entered a plea.
He has been charged with aggravated murder, two counts of tampering with a witness, two counts of obstruction of justice, felony discharge of a firearm causing serious bodily injury and committing a violent offense in the presence of a child.
Robinson also drew attention during the first day of the hearing when he was seen grinning while seated near Kirk’s grieving widow.
Former Utah Valley University police officer Christopher Bagley testified Monday that he witnessed the shooting.
Bagley said that after hearing the gunshot, he went to a nearby gravel-covered rooftop. There, he reportedly discovered an area where it appeared someone had been lying face down with a direct line of sight toward Kirk’s location.
Donald Trump Jr. was also inside the courtroom Monday with his wife, Bettina Anderson, as the couple showed their support for the Kirk family.
Trump Jr. shared a close personal relationship with Kirk, who had previously served as his personal aide during the 2016 general election campaign.
Turning Point USA also became a major force in conservative politics and endorsed Donald Trump, helping energize young Republican voters during his campaigns.
Following Kirk’s death, Trump Jr. posted an emotional tribute on X, admitting he struggled to put his grief into words.
“This isn’t my strong suit, and I don’t even know how to begin to put into words the loss I am feeling right now over the assassination of Charlie Kirk,” he wrote.
Trump Jr. described Kirk as more than a political ally, saying he was “like a little brother” and an inspiration to millions of people around the world.
“Charlie dedicated his life to something bigger than himself,” he added.
One month after Kirk’s death, President Donald Trump awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously.
Erika accepted the honor on behalf of her late husband and thanked Trump for supporting both the family and Kirk’s work.
“Your support of our family and the work that Charlie devoted his life to will be something I cherish forever,” she said.
