A Canadian mother says her 10-year-old son came inches from being torn apart by a grizzly so close he actually “felt its fur” brushing against him.
“He thought he was going to die,” said Veronica Schooner. “He told me he could feel the bear right next to him. But it wasn’t after him. It went after the kids behind him. That’s the only reason he’s alive.”
The attack happened on November 20 during a school outing near a river in the Bella Coola Valley — a remote stretch of British Columbia known for its rugged mountains and aggressive wildlife.
Students from Acwsalcta School were eating lunch when the forest suddenly exploded.
“The bear came out of nowhere,” said one witness. “No noise. No warning. Just pure speed.”
Kids ran. Teachers screamed for them to scatter. One staff member fired bear spray directly into the animal’s face. Another set off a bear banger. The bear kept coming.
“It didn’t stop,” a local responder told us. “It went straight for the kids.”
Three children and one teacher were badly mauled. Their injuries were so serious they were airlifted to Vancouver, more than 300 miles away. All four remain hospitalized.
Officials say the bear might have already been injured, making it unpredictable and extremely aggressive.
“That’s a worst-case scenario,” said BCCOS inspector Kevin Van Damme. “A wounded bear is a dangerous bear. We are asking the entire valley to stay alert. This animal is still out there.”
Residents say fear is spreading through the community.
“You grow up around wildlife here,” said one local father. “But a bear charging out of the woods and attacking little kids? That shakes everyone.”
Seven more people were treated on the trail for shock and minor injuries. Many of the children were left trembling, covered in mud, and screaming for help.
Acwsalcta School praised its staff for saving lives. “Your quick action and courage protected our students,” the school said in a statement. “We are proud of you.”
But parents say the terror isn’t over.
“Until they catch that bear,” one mother said, “nobody around here is sleeping.”
Conservation officers are now combing the valley and warn that anyone who spots the bear should immediately call the RAPP line at 1-877-952-7277.

All followers of Allah have been commanded to kill everyone who is not of your faith so they can have a place in heaven. Is that correct?\’ The expression on his face changed from one of authority and command to that of a little boy who had just been caught with his hand in the cookie jar.\’ He sheepishly replied, \’Yes.\’ I then stated, \’Well, sir, I have a real problem trying to imagine The Pope commanding all Catholics to kill those of your faith or Dr. Stanley ordering all Protestants to do the same in order to guarantee them a place in heaven!\’ The Muslim was speechless. I continued, \’I also have a problem with being your friend when you and your brother clerics are telling your followers to kill me! Let me ask you a question: Would you rather have your Allah, who tells you to kill me in order for you to go to heaven, or my Jesus who tells me to love you because I am going to heaven and He wants you to be there with me?\’ You could have heard a pin drop. Needless to say, the organizers and/or promoters of the \’Diversification\’ training seminar were not happy with my way of dealing with the Islamic Imam, and exposing the truth about the Muslims\’ beliefs. In twenty years there will be enough Muslim voters in the US. to elect the President. I think everyone in the U.S. should be required to read this, but with the ACLU, there is no way this will be widely publicized, unless each of us sends it on!
