Former NBA star Elden Campbell has died in a tragic accident while fishing off the coast of Florida. He was 57.
Officials in Broward County confirmed Campbell drowned after suffering a medical emergency on the water. His death was ruled accidental.
“It was all so sudden,” his sister Sandra Campbell told the New York Post. “He wasn’t sick. He was out fishing, doing what he loved.”
Campbell’s family said in a statement that he passed peacefully “doing what he loved — fishing on the ocean, enjoying his idea of an ideal day.”
They described him as a man of faith and family.
“Elden trusted in his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ,” the statement read. “He was a husband, father, brother, cousin, and friend — generous, funny, disciplined, and kind.”
Campbell was known for his quiet strength and big heart.
His college coach Cliff Ellis called him one of Clemson’s greatest players.
“Elden helped lead us to Clemson’s only ACC regular-season title,” Ellis said. “He went on to win an NBA Championship — but more than that, he was a great person who cared deeply about others.”
Born in Los Angeles, Campbell became a hometown hero when the Lakers picked him in the first round of the 1990 NBA Draft.
The 7-foot center played 15 seasons in the NBA, spending time with the Lakers, Hornets, Nets, and Pistons. He won a championship with Detroit in 2004.
Former teammate Derek Fisher said Campbell was “the definition of steady.”
“He never needed attention,” Fisher told People. “He just showed up, worked hard, and made everyone around him better.”
News of Campbell’s death spread quickly across social media.
“Rest easy, big fella,” wrote former Piston Chauncey Billups on X. “We lost a champion and a brother.”
Clemson University announced it will honor Campbell later this month during a home game.
“Elden’s name will always mean something special here,” Coach Ellis said. “He was one of us — heart, humility, and class.”
