Mexico’s Leftist Lawmakers Erupt into Chaos: Hair-Pulling and Fists Flying (Video)

In a jaw-dropping display of political chaos, lawmakers in Mexico City’s Congress descended into a full-blown fistfight Monday after a debate over dismantling the city’s transparency institute turned physical — and deeply personal.

The clash, now going viral, shows members of the leftist ruling party Morena physically attacking members of the opposition National Action Party (PAN), after PAN legislators protested what they called a “power grab” designed to eliminate government oversight.

“This is not democracy. This is thuggery in suits,” said PAN leader Jorge Romero Herrera. “The people of Mexico deserve answers, not punches.”

The chaos began as opposition lawmakers occupied the podium to protest Morena’s push to dissolve Mexico City’s Institute of Transparency, Access to Public Information and Protection of Personal Data (INFOCDMX) — a key watchdog agency overseeing public records and corruption investigations.

Despite prior agreements to replace the institute with a new body, Morena lawmakers reportedly broke ranks and moved to scrap it entirely, triggering outrage from the opposition.

That’s when tempers snapped.

According to eyewitnesses and footage from inside the chamber:

  • A female lawmaker grabbed another’s arm during the standoff
  • The second woman jabbed her elbow into the first’s stomach
  • Hair-pulling and back-slapping followed
  • A male lawmaker attempted to separate the two — only to be dragged into the shoving match
  • At least four women were seen brawling near the podium as others pulled out phones to film the chaos

Security failed to intervene before the brawl overtook the dais.

Trump White House: “This Is a Red Flag”

The Biden-era media may have shrugged at similar outbursts, but under President Donald J. Trump’s second term, the White House is watching closely.

“Mexico’s leadership must restore law and order inside its own institutions,” said Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt in a statement Tuesday. “Transparency is a non-negotiable element of democracy. President Trump expects accountability — not hair-pulling — from our closest neighbor.”

Senior GOP lawmakers, including Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) and Rep. Jim Banks (R-IN), are calling on the State Department to reassess foreign aid flowing to Mexico City’s government.

“If their ruling party is using fists instead of facts to hide corruption, we should cut the checks until they clean it up,” Banks told Fox News Radio.

The timing couldn’t be more critical. The INFOCDMX transparency institute has played a key role in exposing financial irregularities in both municipal contracts and campaign financing — especially under the Morena party’s control. Its elimination could shield the current administration from further scrutiny heading into Mexico’s 2027 presidential race.

“They’re trying to kill the messenger before the next scandal drops,” said Latin America analyst Dr. Sofia Gutierrez. “The brawl is just a symptom of a deeper panic among the ruling elite.”

After the violence, congressional leaders were forced to suspend the session and relocate to a second, undisclosed venue to continue deliberations.

But the damage is done — both to Mexico City’s fragile checks-and-balances system, and to public trust.

When transparency dies, tyranny wins,” declared Rep. Maria Martinez (PAN). “And if the world won’t hold Morena accountable, we will.”
