Pope Leo Starts 2026 with ‘Urgent Plea’

On a cold, sunlit morning in Rome, Pope Leo XIV began 2026 with a somber cry for peace, calling on the world to confront the violence tearing nations and families apart.

Speaking from his window high above St. Peter’s Square, the 70-year-old pontiff urged thousands of pilgrims to “pray together for peace,” not only across war-ravaged regions but inside homes broken by abuse and despair.

“Let us all pray together for peace: first among nations bloodied by conflict and suffering, but also within our homes, in families wounded by violence or pain,” Leo declared, his voice carrying across the vast basilica courtyard.

The plea came as global conflicts continue to rage — from Eastern Europe and the Middle East to parts of Africa and Asia — where millions remain displaced and humanitarian crises deepen. Vatican officials said the pope’s message reflected growing concern over what he has privately described as a “global fatigue of the soul.”

The Mass marked the Church’s annual World Day of Peace, a tradition first established in 1967 by Pope Paul VI to inspire unity and reflection at the start of each new year.

After an exhausting Christmas season, Leo is expected to take a brief rest before presiding over Epiphany celebrations on Jan. 6, which will officially close the 2025 Holy Year — a once-every-quarter-century jubilee that drew millions of pilgrims to Rome seeking blessings, forgiveness, and renewal.

Immediately after, Leo will convene a rare two-day meeting of the College of Cardinals, reviving an ancient tradition largely set aside under Pope Francis. Vatican watchers say the move underscores Leo’s more collaborative leadership style — one rooted in dialogue and consensus.

“He’s bringing the church back to the table,” said Vatican historian Marco Bellini. “Leo believes governance begins with listening — to his cardinals, to ordinary believers, and to the wounded world beyond Rome’s walls.”

For many of the faithful filling the square Thursday, Leo’s message struck a personal chord. “He reminds us that peace starts in the heart,” said 29-year-old pilgrim Maria Esposito of Naples. “If we can heal families, maybe we can heal the world.”

  1. He left out one word. He should have said, let us pray and obey. Yeah, obedience to GOD’s WORD ONLY.

Yet Catholics made their own works and obedience and NONE of it is to GOD ALMIGHTY.
