Former ESPN host Keith Olbermann ignited a firestorm this weekend after accusing President Donald Trump of committing an “illegal personal war” by ordering the U.S. special forces mission that captured Venezuelan strongman Nicolás Maduro. The raid, executed in the early hours of Saturday in Caracas, was one of the most significant foreign operations of Trump’s second term—one widely praised abroad but immediately condemned by the fiery commentator.
Trump confirmed the capture of Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, in an early-morning TruthSocial post, calling the operation “a decisive blow for freedom in the Western Hemisphere.” Administration officials later said the raid had been planned for months after Maduro was indicted a second time in 2025 for expanding what federal prosecutors described as a “continental narcotics empire.”
But as Venezuelans celebrated in the streets from Miami to Santiago, Olbermann—now known more for his political tirades than his past in sports broadcasting—declared that Trump should be “impeached and removed from office immediately.”
In a Saturday post on X, Olbermann wrote: “Trump has now endangered every man, woman, and child in this nation by his insane and illegal personal war against Venezuela. He must be impeached and removed from office immediately.”
The backlash was instant.
Olbermann’s remarks triggered widespread ridicule, even from some of his former followers. Many Americans accused him of attacking Trump for a mission that finally toppled one of the world’s most brutal socialist regimes.
One user responded: “Or should be thanked for making the continent safer by removing an illegitimate dictator from power.”
Another posted: “Oh no. Keith Olbermann wants Trump impeached… again. At this point it’s background noise. Nobody takes him seriously.”
A third added: “You’re really gonna scream and cry when you see Venezuelans dancing in the streets. This is what freedom looks like.”
By Saturday afternoon, #OlbermannMeltdown was trending nationwide.
Across Latin America, jubilant crowds waved both American and Venezuelan flags—a direct show of gratitude toward the Trump administration. For many of the eight million Venezuelans who fled the country over the past decade, the fall of Maduro was something they never believed they would live to see.
Videos from Santiago, Chile, showed migrants chanting “We are free!” A man celebrating in the crowd told local reporters: “The dictatorship has fallen. Maduro’s drug trafficking has fallen. We are all happy because we finally have hope again.”
Outside Miami, Venezuelan Americans gathered in Doral, singing their national anthem and thanking Trump personally.
“Today, justice is being served,” one woman told a local station. “We want to go home, rebuild our country, and finally live without fear. Long live Venezuela.”
Senior national security officials speaking anonymously said the mission was greenlit after intelligence confirmed Maduro was preparing to escalate cooperation with Mexican cartels. The administration feared a surge in fentanyl trafficking and a new wave of mass migration if action wasn’t taken.
A Pentagon official said, “This was about protecting American families. President Trump made the call when it became clear Maduro posed an escalating threat to U.S. national security.”
Republican lawmakers quickly praised the operation. Sen. Marco Rubio called it “the most important anti-cartel action taken in a generation.”
Even some centrist Democrats offered cautious approval. One House member said, “The people of Venezuela have suffered long enough.”
Despite widespread praise, Olbermann doubled down in follow-up posts, warning that Trump had “provoked instability across the region.” His critics dismissed the outburst as yet another example of what they describe as his “performative outrage.”
A media analyst from the University of Florida told us: “Olbermann has built an online persona around opposing anything Trump does. If Trump discovered a cure for cancer tomorrow, Olbermann would rage-tweet about the side effects.”
Maduro is now set to stand trial in New York City on federal narcotics and weapons charges. U.S. Marshals escorted him out of Caracas under heavy guard, with Trump sharing a photo of the capture on TruthSocial captioned simply: “Justice.”
White House officials say more details about the raid—including the elite units involved—will be revealed in a forthcoming briefing.
For millions of Venezuelans and their relatives in the United States, the message was clear: Trump delivered where past administrations refused to act.
And for Keith Olbermann?
Americans seem to agree on one point: he picked the wrong moment to rage.

This is one more asshole anyway. Why would anyone expect anything less!
He thinks the communist way.
This guy is disgraceful, does anyone listen to him at all.
Kieth Olberman should go back to sports journalism as he has been out of touch with international news for at least the last ten years. Like \”Morning Joe\” he has been irrelevant for years.
An insane TV Host
I will dismiss that TV Host for ignorance! That TV Host must be a anti-trump promoter David.
