Trump Could Deport Ilhan Omar Over Brother Marriage Claim

Rep. Ilhan Omar is back at the center of a political firestorm after Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin claimed federal investigators are digging into explosive allegations surrounding her immigration history — including the long-running accusation that she married her own brother.

Mullin went so far as to warn that the Minnesota Democrat could potentially face deportation if investigators uncover evidence that she obtained her U.S. citizenship through fraud.

“We know that she married her brother to try to bring him into the United States,” Mullin claimed during an appearance at the 2026 Republican Midterm Convention.

The allegation centers on Omar’s former husband, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, a British citizen whom she legally married in 2009.

Omar has repeatedly denied that Elmi is her brother, calling the accusation “absolutely false and ridiculous.” Despite years of political attacks and media scrutiny, the claim has never been publicly proven.

But Mullin suggested federal authorities are now taking a closer look.

“There may be more to this — the whole family migration and possibly some illegal activity for them to come to the United States to begin with,” Mullin said, according to reports.

He also raised the possibility of severe consequences if investigators determine Omar improperly obtained immigration benefits or citizenship.

“If we can prove it that, maybe you shouldn’t have been here in the first place; we’ll deport you,” Mullin said.

No criminal charges tied to the marriage allegation have been publicly announced.

The Justice Department can seek to revoke the citizenship of a naturalized American if it proves in court that citizenship was illegally obtained or secured through concealment of a material fact or willful misrepresentation.

Vice President JD Vance previously said in May that the Justice Department was investigating Omar for possible immigration fraud, though Omar’s office dismissed the allegation as a “ridiculous lie.”

The controversy stretches back years.

Omar first married Ahmed Hirsi in a religious ceremony in 2002, though the marriage was not legally registered at the time. The pair later separated.

In 2009, Omar legally married Elmi. She has said that relationship ended religiously in 2011, although the legal divorce was not finalized until 2017.

Omar later legally married Hirsi in 2018 before the couple divorced in 2019. She is now married to political consultant Tim Mynett.

The brother allegation first emerged during Omar’s rise in Minnesota politics and has followed her ever since. News organizations examining the claim have previously said they could not establish that Elmi was her sibling.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly brought up the accusation while attacking Omar, one of his most outspoken congressional critics.

Omar, who was born in Somalia and became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2000, has accused Trump and his allies of recycling conspiracy theories about her for political purposes.

After Trump announced earlier this year that federal officials were examining allegations surrounding her, Omar fired back.

“Sorry, Trump, your support is collapsing, and you’re panicking,” she wrote. “Right on cue, you’re deflecting from your failures with lies and conspiracy theories about me.”

Now, with Mullin publicly discussing the investigation and raising the possibility of deportation, the years-old controversy surrounding Omar’s immigration history has erupted all over again.

A DHS spokesperson declined to discuss specifics of any investigation, saying the department does not comment on investigative techniques, ongoing probes or possible future enforcement actions.

“No one, including members of Congress, are above the law,” the department said.
