Child Star’s Chilling Warning Resurfaces as Husband is Accused of Shocking Crimes

Long before police moved in — and just weeks before a criminal investigation exploded into public view — Melissa Gilbert was already sounding the alarm about child abuse.

Now, those words are coming back to haunt her.

The former child star, 61, had posted an emotional Instagram message last November reflecting on the sexualization of minors in Hollywood and her own vulnerability as a teenage actress. At the time, it appeared deeply personal. Today, it reads like a grim prelude to the shocking allegations now facing her husband, Timothy Busfield.

Busfield, 68, is facing two counts of criminal sexual contact of a minor and one count of child abuse in New Mexico, accused of inappropriate behavior involving 11-year-old twins who appeared on the Fox series The Cleaning Lady, which he directed.

According to investigators, the alleged abuse unfolded quietly over more than a year — from late 2022 into early 2024 — both on set and away from the cameras.

Police claim Busfield and Gilbert cultivated relationships with the children and their families outside of work, inviting them to off-set gatherings and even buying Christmas presents. Prosecutors allege the gifts were used to “foster closeness,” language that has sparked outrage as details of the case emerge.

In a sworn affidavit, Albuquerque Police Officer Marvin Brown alleges Busfield encouraged the children to call him “Uncle Tim” and repeatedly engaged in physical contact — including tickling — even after the boys reportedly made clear they were uncomfortable.

One of the children later told a therapist that Busfield touched his genital area and buttocks while on set, according to the criminal complaint. Investigators say the boy began suffering nightmares about the director and was later diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Busfield, who previously gained mainstream fame on The West Wing, has denied all wrongdoing. He has described the interactions as innocent and “playful,” and has claimed the parents of the children were seeking revenge after the twins were not brought back for the show’s final season.

The investigation reportedly began in November 2024 after medical staff at the University of New Mexico Hospital flagged what they believed could be grooming behavior tied to the production. Busfield surrendered to police on January 13 after briefly being reported missing.

As scrutiny intensified, Gilbert quietly deleted her Instagram account — but not before internet sleuths preserved her haunting post about child exploitation.

In that November message, Gilbert described searching for images of herself as a teenager and feeling physically ill at what she saw.

“Through the lens of today, this is shocking,” she wrote. “I have no words other than to say, ‘I WAS A CHILD.’”

She went on to express gratitude for the adults who protected her on set — while acknowledging that many young performers are not afforded the same safeguards.

The post was partially written in response to comments by Megyn Kelly regarding Jeffrey Epstein, with Gilbert sharply warning her to be “careful” when discussing abuse involving minors.

Married since 2013, Gilbert has not publicly commented on the allegations against Busfield as the case continues to unfold — leaving her past warnings echoing louder than ever amid one of the most disturbing Hollywood scandals of the year.
