The Mounting Evidence Jeffrey Epstein was Murdered

Nearly seven years after the death of Jeffrey Epstein, newly released documents are once again drawing attention to the unanswered questions surrounding the circumstances of his passing.

Epstein, who was awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges, was found unresponsive in his cell at Manhattan’s Metropolitan Correctional Center on August 10, 2019. His death was officially ruled a suicide. But a fresh review of surveillance notes, internal memos and investigative summaries has reignited public interest in the details of his final hours.

Among the most discussed revelations is what an FBI memorandum described as a “flash of orange” seen on surveillance footage at approximately 10:39 p.m. the night before Epstein was discovered. The blurry shape appeared to move up a staircase leading toward the tier where Epstein was housed.

Inmates at the facility were issued orange uniforms and bedding. At that hour, they were expected to be locked in their cells.

The Justice Department’s Office of Inspector General later concluded the movement was likely a corrections officer carrying orange linen. However, the FBI memo reportedly noted the figure “could possibly be an inmate escorted up to that Tier,” a detail that has fueled renewed speculation online.

Officials have maintained that no unauthorized individuals entered the housing unit that night.

The newly reviewed documents also outline a series of missteps at the jail in the hours leading up to Epstein’s death.

Court filings previously revealed that two guards assigned to the Special Housing Unit admitted to falsifying records, including required 30-minute checks. Prosecutors said the officers failed to conduct routine rounds overnight and later completed paperwork indicating they had.

Both guards were later charged in connection with the falsified logs, though the charges were ultimately dismissed.

Additionally, two cameras near Epstein’s cell were reportedly not functioning properly at the time. Surveillance footage that does exist includes a brief gap — once described publicly as a “missing minute.” Officials have since said the gap was caused by a routine nightly system reset.

Another detail drawing attention is a draft public statement about Epstein’s death that included the incorrect date of August 9. The Department of Justice has attributed the discrepancy to a typographical error and denied any suggestion that the announcement was prepared in advance.

The documents also confirm that federal prosecutors met with Epstein’s attorneys in late July 2019 to discuss the possibility of cooperation.

One memo references discussions about a potential “resolution” of the case, though it does not specify what, if anything, Epstein might have offered. At the time, Epstein had pleaded not guilty to sex trafficking and conspiracy charges.

The prospect of cooperation has long been a focal point for observers who believe Epstein may have possessed information about high-profile associates.

Epstein had social and financial ties to prominent figures in business, politics and entertainment. However, no evidence has emerged linking those connections to the circumstances of his death.

While the New York City medical examiner ruled the death a suicide by hanging, forensic pathologist Dr. Michael Baden — retained by Epstein’s brother — has continued to question that conclusion.

Baden has said that certain neck injuries were more consistent with “strangulation pressure” than self-inflicted hanging. He has called for additional review of the case.

Epstein’s brother and his former associate Ghislaine Maxwell have both publicly stated that they do not believe he took his own life.

Former U.S. Attorney General William Barr acknowledged “serious irregularities” at the detention facility in the days following Epstein’s death, later describing the situation as a “perfect storm of screw-ups.”

Despite the official ruling, public skepticism has persisted. Polls conducted in the years since Epstein’s death have shown that many Americans remain unconvinced by the suicide determination.

The newly released files do not overturn the original finding. But they do provide additional context — and, for some, additional questions — about the events of that August night.

As more documents come to light, interest in the case appears unlikely to fade.

  1. Of course he was. The only question is by who or on what group’s orders. His demise wouldn’t even make a decent mystery novel if put on paper.
