The home of Los Angeles schools superintendent Alberto Carvalho was swarmed by federal agents early Wednesday morning, marking a dramatic turn for a district long dogged by controversy, mismanagement, and political infighting.
Carvalho, who has led the Los Angeles Unified School District since 2022, is now the focus of a federal investigation that sources describe as “white-collar in nature.” While the court documents remain sealed, multiple officials confirmed to ABC News that the probe is unrelated to immigration issues.
The search was fast. Agents entered and exited the San Pedro property within minutes, leaving neighbors stunned and reporters scrambling for answers.
One witness told local media, “They moved with purpose. It looked like they knew exactly what they were there to get.”
Federal authorities have declined to specify what they seized or what charges, if any, Carvalho might face. But a U.S. Attorney’s Office spokesperson confirmed the search warrant was fully authorized and executed by federal law enforcement under the Department of Justice — now operating under the renewed law-and-order directives of President Donald Trump’s administration.
A separate operation was also launched at the LAUSD headquarters. District leadership issued a brief statement acknowledging “law enforcement activity” inside the building but offering no details on the target or scope.
“We are cooperating fully,” the district said. “We do not have additional information at this time.”
Behind the scenes, however, concerns have been simmering for months. Carvalho has been the longest-serving LAUSD superintendent in two decades, yet his tenure has been marked by escalating questions over district spending, contracting practices, and the handling of pandemic-era funds.
A former senior district employee, speaking anonymously, said, “There were always whispers about how money was being used. People wanted answers, but every time someone pushed, the door slammed shut.”
Carvalho has not spoken publicly about the raid. His legal team has also remained silent.
Federal officials have not indicated when additional information will be released, but sources close to the investigation describe it as “active and evolving.”
One law enforcement source put it bluntly: “This is only the beginning.”
