Mob Turns ‘Epic Snowball Fight’ into Anti-Police Free-for-All

What started as a playful snow day gathering in Washington Square Park on Monday exploded into a dangerous, fast-moving mob scene that left NYPD officers ducking for cover — and raised fresh questions about New York City’s handling of street disorder in the Trump-era winter storm.

Police say the chaos broke out shortly after 4 p.m., when hundreds of mostly young adults descended on the park for what social media users billed as the “biggest snowball fight NYC has ever seen.”
But the crowd quickly shifted from lighthearted to lawless.

Officers responding to a 911 call found “pure pandemonium,” according to NYPD sources. People hurled snowballs not only at each other but at passing cars and even at patrol units attempting to move through the park perimeter.

“It stopped being fun fast,” said Jackson Ortiz, 24, who arrived expecting a casual snowball match. “I got blasted in the ear. Still ringing. Folks were acting like it was a riot, not a snow day.”

At one point, several participants surrounded a marked police SUV and unleashed a barrage of ice-packed snowballs. Video shows officers hastily getting inside and pulling away as the crowd jeered.

Police attempted crowd control through loudspeaker orders.
Officers told the group to enjoy the snow but “stop throwing at cars immediately.” Many ignored the warnings.

One officer raised a can of pepper spray, shouting at the crowd to back away. Witnesses say the threat barely slowed the group, which continued taking shots at police “for the thrill of it.”

Despite the escalating disorder, no injuries were reported.

NYPD and Unions Blast the Lawlessness

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch condemned the mob behavior in a statement posted to X, calling it “disgraceful, dangerous, and criminal — not innocent fun.”

She added, “We will review every angle of today’s incident. Individuals who targeted officers will be held accountable.”

Police unions went further, accusing city leaders of enabling a climate where hostility toward officers has become routine.

The Police Benevolent Association called the snowball attack “unacceptable, outrageous, and despicable.”
The union added, “This is the environment NYC police officers are forced to operate in. Every individual involved must be identified and charged with assault on a police officer. We expect our elected officials to finally speak out.”

Detectives’ Endowment Association President Scott Munro echoed that outrage.

“What we saw today was not some harmless winter tradition,” Munro said. “This was a deliberate, disruptive, and dangerous attack on uniformed law enforcement. Detectives will do what they always do: identify the culprits and bring them in.”

Background: A City Still Struggling With Public Disorder

Washington Square Park has been a flashpoint for unruly behavior for years, especially during periods of lax enforcement.
Under President Trump’s renewed emphasis on public safety in 2026, federal officials have pushed major cities to restore order — but critics say New York’s local leadership remains hesitant to crack down on disruptive crowds.

Monday’s snowball melee, police sources say, is the latest example of social media-driven gatherings that spiral out of control when officers hesitate to intervene forcefully, fearing political backlash.

“This is what happens when no one thinks the rules apply anymore,” one veteran NYPD officer said. “It starts with snowballs. It doesn’t always end that way.”
