A fresh firestorm erupted inside the conservative movement this week after Meghan McCain blasted Candace Owens’ upcoming investigative series about Erika Kirk, the widow of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, who was assassinated last year in a killing that shook the nation during President Trump’s return to office.
McCain, a longtime media figure and daughter of the late Senator John McCain, accused Owens of exploiting a grieving family and dragging a political martyr’s widow back into the national spotlight. Her reaction sent shockwaves through a conservative base already divided over how to honor Charlie’s legacy.

Owens released a trailer for her February 25 debut of “Bride of Charlie,” a multi-part docuseries examining Erika Kirk’s rise to the top of Turning Point USA and the controversies that have followed her. Within hours, McCain unloaded on X.
“This is pure, unadulterated, f–king evil,” McCain wrote in response to Babylon Bee CEO Seth Dillon, who had openly questioned whether Charlie Kirk would have approved of the project. McCain did not hold back.
“Who in God’s name would put a woman whose husband was brutally assassinated in front of the entire world through this again?” she said. “I’m so upset by this. I am deeply sorry Erika and her family have to be put through this.”
According to sources close to McCain, she was stunned by the trailer’s tone, which uses dramatic cuts from the day of Charlie’s assassination interwoven with footage of Erika giving emotional testimony.
“She feels it’s a betrayal,” one conservative strategist told us. “There are real wounds here. This wasn’t political theater. A man was murdered.”
Owens’ series opens with raw video from the chaotic moments following Charlie Kirk’s killing, an event President Trump later called “an attack on the American spirit” during a nationally televised address.
The trailer quickly shifts to Erika Kirk declaring, “The cries of this widow will echo around the world like a battle cry.” Owens then pivots to allegations about Erika’s leadership of Turning Point USA after Charlie’s death, spotlighting criticisms from inside the movement.
One unnamed figure in the trailer remarks, “Nobody knows why she’s out there in a glittering pantsuit, standing in a tent built to look like the one her husband died in, throwing merch to the crowd.”
The trailer also hints at allegations linking Erika to a rumored trafficking scandal in Romania, though no evidence has been presented publicly. Owens implies the series will investigate those claims directly.
The conservative world did not stay quiet.
Activist Laura Loomer blasted the project as “depraved” and “total harassment of a woman trying to be graceful and carry on her husband’s legacy.”
Hundreds of commenters echoed her sentiment, accusing Owens of creating a spectacle that weaponizes tragedy for clicks.
One user wrote, “You’re the antithesis of Christlike. It’s clear you don’t care about the damage you’re doing in God’s name.”
Another added, “This is pure demonic behavior. She has lost all sense of human decency.”
Many also warned that Charlie Kirk’s children could be retraumatized.
“This is not honoring God or Charlie,” one viewer said. “It’s feeding vultures. These are real people being hurt.”
Despite the backlash, Owens received enthusiastic support from her loyal audience.
“There is nothing more exciting than the truth exposed,” one supporter posted. “Onward.”
Another declared, “Can’t wait. This is going to be legendary.”
Owens, whose following grew significantly during Trump’s 2025 reelection campaign, has built her brand on tackling taboo subjects inside conservative politics. Her team insists the series is “not an attack,” but rather a “search for truth.”
As of publication, neither Erika Kirk nor Turning Point USA has issued any response to the trailer or to McCain’s condemnation.
Sources close to Turning Point USA say the organization is bracing for “a very uncomfortable spotlight” when the series airs.
“This is going to open wounds,” one insider admitted. “Maybe that’s the point. But it’ll come with a cost.”

I’ve never been a big fan of the McCain’s that said Owens is wrong to try to damage Charlie and his wife. That family has been through enough! I don’t know when or why Owens changed her mind about things but in this instance she is dead wrong. What little respect I’ve had for her is now slightly above ZERO!
