Daughter of George W Bush Official Sentenced for Friend’s Murder

A Maryland courtroom delivered a dramatic end to a years-long murder case tied to one of Washington’s most prominent diplomatic families.

Sophia Negroponte, the adopted daughter of former U.S. intelligence chief John Negroponte, was sentenced Friday to 35 years behind bars for the fatal stabbing of a longtime friend during a drunken argument inside a Maryland Airbnb.

The 33-year-old was convicted of second-degree murder in the 2020 killing of 24-year-old Yousuf Rasmussen. The sentence was handed down by Montgomery County Circuit Court Judge Terrence McGann following a retrial that reaffirmed the original verdict.

“This is an appropriate and just outcome in light of the seriousness of this crime,” Montgomery County State’s Attorney John McCarthy said after the sentencing. “Two separate juries carefully examined the evidence and reached the same conclusion.”

A Violent Night Turns Deadly

Prosecutors said the deadly confrontation unfolded on the night of Feb. 13, 2020, at a rented Airbnb in Rockville, Maryland.

Negroponte, Rasmussen, and another person had reportedly been drinking heavily when tensions boiled over.

According to court testimony, Rasmussen left the property after an initial argument. But when he returned to retrieve his cellphone, the dispute reignited.

That’s when prosecutors say the situation spiraled into violence.

McCarthy told the court Negroponte stabbed Rasmussen multiple times, including a fatal wound that severed his jugular vein.

Emergency crews responded to a frantic 911 call at approximately 11:16 p.m. Officers arrived to find a chaotic and bloody scene inside the rental home.

Charging documents say Negroponte was discovered lying on top of Rasmussen’s body, covered in blood and shouting repeatedly, “I’m sorry.”

Rasmussen was pronounced dead at the scene.

Negroponte was taken into custody shortly afterward.

During questioning, investigators said she claimed she could not remember the attack. She told police the argument had started over what she described as a “silly issue.”

At one point, she allegedly admitted she remembered pulling a knife from Rasmussen’s neck.

Retrial After Appeals Court Ruling

Negroponte had originally been convicted in 2023 and sentenced to the same 35-year term.

However, a Maryland appeals court overturned that conviction in early 2024 after ruling jurors were improperly shown disputed portions of a police interrogation that could have influenced their assessment of Negroponte’s credibility.

The ruling forced prosecutors to retry the case.

In November, a second jury once again found her guilty of second-degree murder.

The judge ultimately imposed the same sentence that had been handed down in the original trial.

Family Ties to Washington Power

The case drew national attention in part because of Negroponte’s family background.

Her father, John Negroponte, served as the first Director of National Intelligence under President George W. Bush following the September 11 terrorist attacks.

He later became deputy secretary of state and held numerous high-profile diplomatic posts, including U.S. ambassador to Iraq, the United Nations, Mexico, Honduras, and the Philippines.

Sophia Negroponte was one of five Honduran children adopted by John Negroponte and his wife Diana during his diplomatic posting in Honduras in the 1980s.

Sophia and Rasmussen had known each other for years and previously attended the same Washington-area high school.

A Long Road to Justice

The case has now stretched more than six years since Rasmussen’s death.

For Rasmussen’s family, the sentence closes a painful chapter.

Prosecutors argued throughout both trials that the evidence clearly showed a violent attack that ended a young man’s life during what began as a night of drinking among friends.

With the sentencing now finalized, Sophia Negroponte will spend decades in prison for the crime that stunned Washington circles and left one family grieving.

The ruling comes as President Donald Trump’s administration continues to emphasize law-and-order policies nationwide, with federal and state leaders increasingly calling for tougher accountability in violent crime cases.

For the Rasmussen family, however, the case was never about politics.

It was about justice.
