Anti-ICE Protester Accidentally Sets Himself on Fire While Burning American Flag (Video)

A chaotic anti-ICE protest in Portland took a bizarre turn over the weekend when a demonstrator attempting to burn an American flag accidentally set himself on fire, stunning onlookers and igniting a firestorm online.

The incident happened Saturday outside a federal immigration detention facility that has become a flashpoint for demonstrations against the Trump administration’s aggressive immigration enforcement policies.

Video of the moment quickly spread across social media. The footage shows a protester dressed in dark clothing and a hoodie holding a burning object near an American flag in the middle of the street. Within seconds, flames appear to jump from the flag to the man’s clothing.

As the fire spreads, the protester begins frantically stomping and spinning in circles while bystanders shout in shock.

“What an idiot!” one person can be heard yelling in the video.

Others shouted for someone to put the flames out as the protester struggled to extinguish the fire on his clothing. After several frantic moments, the flames were finally put out. The man then staggered around briefly before walking away from the scene.

It remains unclear whether he suffered injuries.

The Portland Police Bureau confirmed officers are aware of the widely circulated video but said they had little additional information about the incident.

“I’m aware of the video just as you are,” a police spokesperson said in a statement. “That area generates numerous calls for service every night, and it is not always possible for officers to investigate each one individually.”

Officials from the Department of Homeland Security did not immediately respond to requests for comment about the protest.

The demonstration took place outside a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility that has been the center of repeated protests since President Donald Trump returned to the White House and moved swiftly to expand immigration enforcement nationwide.

Under Trump’s renewed crackdown, federal authorities have increased deportations and expanded detention operations, moves supporters say are necessary to restore border security and enforce existing immigration laws.

Critics, particularly left-wing activist groups, have organized regular demonstrations outside ICE facilities across the country, including the one in Portland.

But the fiery mishap quickly became the focus of online ridicule.

Many social media users mocked the protester, calling the incident “instant karma.”

“We were all taught not to play with fire,” one user wrote on X. “This is exactly why.”

Others joked that the American flag was “fighting back.”

Another commenter sarcastically described the protester as part of the left’s “best and brightest.”

Portland has long been a hotspot for political unrest. The city gained national attention during the violent protests of 2020, and clashes between activists and law enforcement have continued sporadically in the years since.

Federal officials have warned that protests targeting immigration facilities have at times crossed the line into harassment and threats against officers.

Saturday’s incident, however, appeared to end not with arrests or injuries to law enforcement — but with a protester learning a painful lesson about playing with fire.
