‘Today’ Host Devastated After Missing Out on Savannah Guthrie Interview

Craig Melvin may be smiling on camera, but behind the scenes, his latest Today setback is reportedly hitting hard.

Savannah Guthrie’s emotional return to the spotlight was already set to be one of the biggest moments on the morning show this season. But instead of sitting down with his co-host for the highly anticipated interview, Melvin was reportedly left watching from the sidelines after the job went to Hoda Kotb instead.

That decision is now fueling fresh questions about where Melvin really stands at NBC.

According to reports, Melvin believed Savannah’s first major interview after her family ordeal would naturally fall to him. As her official co-host during the show’s first two hours, he allegedly saw it as an important moment not just for the program, but for his own place on it. Instead, the network reportedly handed the assignment to Kotb, leaving Melvin blindsided.

Insiders claim the sting came not just from being passed over, but from never truly being in the conversation at all. That, according to the chatter, is what has left him feeling rattled.

Melvin has been a key part of the NBC family for years, and his 2024 promotion to sit beside Guthrie seemed like a major vote of confidence. Stepping into the role once held by Kotb was no small move, and many believed it signaled that the network saw him as a central part of Today’s future.

But now, that confidence may have taken a serious hit.

Sources say Melvin viewed the Savannah interview as proof that he was being fully embraced as the show’s co-host. Losing that moment to Kotb, who had already stepped away from the seat, reportedly felt like a sharp and very public blow. What should have been a defining opportunity instead turned into a painful reminder that his standing may not be as secure as he thought.

The situation has reportedly sparked confusion behind the scenes, with some wondering why Melvin was not given the chance to handle such an important segment. For a host who thought he had earned that level of trust, the move has reportedly raised real doubts about what comes next.

And those doubts are only getting louder.

According to insiders, the disappointment has left Melvin questioning his future with the show. What once felt stable now feels uncertain, and the sudden shift has reportedly shaken his confidence in where he fits within the Today pecking order.

Still, the official line from the show tells a different story. Representatives insisted Melvin was kept in the loop and was fully supportive of Guthrie’s interview with Kotb. But with rumors swirling and the optics of the decision impossible to ignore, not everyone is buying that everything is perfectly fine behind the curtain.

The timing only adds to the drama. Savannah is set to return to Today on Monday, April 6, with Kotb herself sharing the news on air. She told viewers that Guthrie would soon be back in her seat alongside Melvin, while Melvin praised his co-host and said he could not wait to welcome her back to Studio 1A.

On the surface, it was a warm and polished moment.

But underneath it, the questions remain.

Was this simply a one-off decision based on Guthrie’s longtime bond with Kotb? Or was it a telling sign that Melvin may not be as locked in as viewers were led to believe?

Either way, what should have been a triumphant return for Savannah has now turned into a backstage headache for Craig — and a fresh wave of speculation about whether his future on Today is really as solid as it seems.

If you want, I can also make this even more dramatic, more New York Post-style, or give you an even clickier headline set.

  1. Nobody actually gives a rat’s patoot about any of it. At the present time we don’t even actually know if the woman was kidnapped or the whole thing is some sort of idiotic stunt. Always remember, we’re dealing with entertainment industry here and anything is possible. I’m not saying she wasn’t kidnapped. I’m just saying remember who we’re dealing with.

  2. I think this whole thing of Melvin being felt left out is a big ruckus about nothing. Kotb and Guthrie have a long history and that history and friendship probably played into the picture. They have a natural connection and if Melvin has so much insecurity that he can see that, that’s his problem and not the network’s. And while Guthrie is a very good actress, I don’t think anyone could pull off the emotions we’ve seen if it’s not real.
