Pilot Faints in the Cockpit Mid-Flight After Staying Up All Night

Passengers on a routine early morning flight got a terrifying wake-up call when their captain suddenly passed out mid-air — and the shocking reason behind it is raising serious questions.

According to an official report from Romania’s aviation safety authority, the 57-year-old pilot lost consciousness about 50 minutes into a 6 a.m. Tarom flight departing from Bucharest’s Henri Coandă International Airport. The flight was headed to Amsterdam, and while the situation could have turned catastrophic, the co-pilot managed to keep things under control and safely land the plane.

But the drama didn’t end there.

Despite the mid-flight scare, the same captain initially planned to continue working the return trip. Before takeoff, he admitted he wasn’t feeling well and handed control over — but nearly an hour into the flight back to Bucharest, things took an even more alarming turn. The pilot reportedly became ill again and then fainted, forcing the co-pilot to declare an emergency.

By the time the plane touched down, medical crews were already on standby. All 87 passengers were safely evacuated, but the incident left many stunned — especially once investigators uncovered what may have caused the near-disaster.

Officials say the pilot hadn’t slept at all the night before the flights. On top of that, he was reportedly affected by cabin noise and even exposure to mosquito repellent, a bizarre combination that may have contributed to him blacking out not once, but twice.

The fallout was swift. Authorities reprimanded the veteran pilot and slapped him with strict limitations — banning him from flying at night or taking on routes longer than two hours.

The chilling incident is now sparking fresh concerns about pilot fatigue and safety standards, leaving many travelers wondering just how close this flight came to tragedy.
