Middle Schoolers Stop Bus from Crashing After Driver Passes Out

They didn’t hesitate—and it may have saved dozens of lives.

A terrifying ride home nearly turned into a full-blown tragedy in Mississippi when a school bus driver suddenly blacked out on a busy highway—forcing a group of middle schoolers to make split-second, life-or-death decisions.

The chaos unfolded Wednesday afternoon just after the bus left Hancock Middle School in Hancock County with around 40 kids onboard. Behind the wheel was 46-year-old driver Leah Taylor, who suddenly suffered an asthma attack. She reached for her medication—but lost consciousness before she could use it.

That’s when panic hit.

Students say the bus began swerving across the four-lane road, sending kids into a frenzy. But amid the screaming, a handful of young heroes sprang into action.

Twelve-year-old sixth grader Jackson Casnave, sitting directly behind Taylor, realized something was terribly wrong. Without waiting, he jumped into position and grabbed the wheel.

“I didn’t have time to process my emotions,” Jackson later said. “I just wanted to make sure that nobody got hurt.”

At the same time, fellow sixth grader Darrius Clark, also 12, rushed forward and slammed on the brakes. Working together, the boys managed to steer the out-of-control bus onto a median and bring it to a stop—before things turned deadly.

Meanwhile, Darrius’ 13-year-old sister Kayleigh sprinted from the back of the bus and dialed 911—but the call was nearly drowned out by terrified classmates screaming in the background.

“I was scared, but also I had to help,” Kayleigh said.

And the heroics didn’t stop there.

Eighth grader Destiny Cornelius, 15, rushed to Taylor’s side and spotted a nebulizer in her hand. Realizing what needed to be done, she administered the medication while another student, 13-year-old McKenzy Finch, held the driver’s head steady.

Finch even grabbed Taylor’s ringing phone and alerted the school district’s transportation team about the unfolding emergency.

Within minutes, what could have been a catastrophic crash had turned into a jaw-dropping rescue—all thanks to a group of quick-thinking kids.

Taylor has since made a full recovery—and isn’t holding back her gratitude.

“I’m grateful for my students,” she said. “They’re the ones that saved my life and everybody else’s on that bus.”

The school wasted no time recognizing the young heroes. The students were honored at a pep rally on Friday—and will soon be rewarded with a celebratory lunch outing of their choice.

Principal Dr. Melissa Saucier summed it up best: “What they did took courage. They didn’t wait for somebody to step in—they stepped up themselves.”

And just like that, a routine ride home turned into a story of bravery no one on that bus will ever forget.
