A veteran anti-poaching ranger who spent his life fighting to protect South Africa’s rhinos was killed in a horrifying and sudden attack by the very animal he worked so hard to save.
Schoeman van Jaarsveld, 58, a lifelong conservationist and respected private security operator, was gored to death by a black rhino while on patrol at the Samara Karoo Reserve in South Africa on the morning of Thursday, April 23. The incident happened at around 10:30 a.m. local time, according to reports from George Herald, The U.S. Sun and the Daily Mail.
Van Jaarsveld was reportedly out on foot with his highly trained patrol team when tragedy struck. He was part of the reserve’s anti-poaching effort and ran a private security firm dedicated to protecting rhinos from illegal hunters, making his death all the more devastating for those who knew him.
In a statement cited by The U.S. Sun and the Daily Mail, a spokesperson for Samara Karoo Reserve said emergency crews were called immediately after the attack, but there was nothing they could do. Van Jaarsveld was pronounced dead at the scene.
“He will be sadly missed and we extend our deepest condolences to his family and team,” the reserve said.
Officials also confirmed that another member of the patrol team suffered minor injuries during the ordeal. No shots were fired, and the black rhino was not harmed.
The reserve said it will assist with funeral arrangements for van Jaarsveld and confirmed that a full investigation is now underway. Authorities are reportedly being fully cooperated with as they work to determine exactly what went wrong during the patrol.
Friends and fellow rangers say the attack was sudden, violent and nearly impossible to survive.
Arno Potgeiter, a field ranger who said he had been trained by van Jaarsveld, told The U.S. Sun that the seasoned conservationist was trying to track a black rhino when everything took a deadly turn.
“He was very good at his job and I was told he was out trying to track down a black rhino,” Potgeiter said. “Something went very wrong and they came face to face and my friend was badly gored.”
Another friend familiar with the tragedy described the encounter as “explosive,” saying van Jaarsveld “took the rhino’s horn” in the attack and suffered injuries so severe they were essentially untreatable.
His death has sent shockwaves through South Africa’s anti-poaching and wildlife protection community, where van Jaarsveld was widely respected for his courage and commitment.
What makes the tragedy even more heartbreaking is the cruel irony of it all. Van Jaarsveld was not a tourist, thrill-seeker or outsider. He was a man who dedicated his life to protecting endangered wildlife from criminals and poachers, only to die at the hands of the very creature he was trying to defend.
Representatives from Samara Karoo Reserve and the South African Police Service had not responded to media requests for comment at the time of reporting.
For those who knew him, van Jaarsveld’s death is not just a freak accident. It is a brutal reminder of the dangerous front lines conservation workers face every day while protecting some of the world’s most threatened animals.
