A promising young runner with his whole future ahead of him has died in a shocking turn of events that’s left a Texas campus—and a tight-knit track community—reeling.
Graycen Vargo, a 21-year-old standout at Texas A&M University-Texarkana, collapsed in the middle of a race during a championship meet in New Orleans on Friday. What started as just another competition quickly turned into a nightmare.
The junior was competing in the Red River Athletic Conference Championships, hosted by Xavier University, when he suddenly suffered a medical emergency on the track. Witnesses say chaos broke out as officials rushed to his side.
Emergency crews responded immediately, providing on-the-spot medical care before transporting him to a nearby hospital. Tragically, despite those efforts, Vargo later died.
Officials have not released details about what caused the sudden collapse.
Back on campus, the shock has been overwhelming.
“Our thoughts are with Graycen’s family, teammates, and friends as they deal with this unimaginable loss,” said university president Ross Alexander. “He was a respected member of the student body and a beloved athlete. His presence will be deeply missed.”
Vargo wasn’t just another name on the roster—he was a rising talent and a standout student. The Dallas native, majoring in computer science, had just joined the team this year after running at Jacksonville College. But he wasted no time making an impact.
In fact, he was recently honored with the school’s prestigious Eagle Excellence Award—given only to student-athletes who shine both on and off the field.
Athletic director Ryan Wall called the loss “heartbreaking,” adding that the entire athletic department is grieving alongside Vargo’s loved ones.
But perhaps the most emotional tribute came from his former high school coach, who remembered the young runner as more than just an athlete.
“I first met Graycen as an 8th grader… what I found was one of the most fiercely competitive, determined, and loyal teammates I’ve ever known,” wrote coach Ben Nicholas.
Over five years, Nicholas said he watched Vargo grow into a leader who pushed others to be better while always putting his teammates first.
“Graycen, you are a legend,” he wrote. “I love you so much. I am so proud of you.”
Now, a grieving community is left trying to process how a vibrant young life could be cut short in an instant—right in the middle of doing what he loved most.
